Papelbon Took Controversial Toradol

ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes is reporting that Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon took controversial anti-inflammatory Toradol during his time with the Red Sox. Toradol is currently legal in the United States but has been banned in England because of risks of life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding. Papelbon told Edes that he began taking the anti-inflammatory in 2007, the same year his then-team Red Sox won the World Series.
Papelbon told Edes that he stopped taking Toradol after meeting with the Phillies during a pre-signing physical. Papelbon said that he took the drug 30 minutes before a game and the effects lasted for about four hours.Toradol is not banned by MLB or the NFL but some clubs choose to ban its use. The NFL has recently restricted its consumption and tightened rules around its administration. In the NFL, only team doctors can administer the drug to players on the injured reserve and only in the lowest recommended dose.
Papelbon says the Phillies training staff have safer anti-inflammatory treatments and Papelbon says he has been Toradol-free since joining the Phillies. This is good considering some of the FDA’s listed side-effects: “increased risk of serious GI adverse events including bleeding, ulcer, and stomach or intestine perforation, which can be fatal; may occur at any time during use and without warning signs.”
I think Pap made the right decision.

Considering his drop in velocity in 2012, they may want to reconsider that decision. Just kidding, obviously we don’t want him taking anything risky for his health, but the velocity loss is real.
Look at 2012 compared to the other seasons.

that’s a trap we all fall into pretty easily. Spring training has it’s charm, and there always are stories to foillow, but there’ll come a time when the blanks will be different as they fill in. but the sentence similar.
For example…Can’t wait for Opening Day, mainly so we can stop talking about this ridiculous stuff.
I’ll tag that one truer than not.
Funny thing about this story is I read thye Philly.com version of it before reading the Gordon Edes article. And they didn’t just carry a wire service version of it, rather having a staffer write a somewhat lengthy piece, or at least not a blurb. Noticably different was only mentio0ing that5 Papelbon took the drug. Edes, on the other hand said that Papelbon, and a number of his teammates took the drug. So Edes story tied in with the recent Schilling stuff, at least on a connect the dot basis.
None of that makes the story interesting, just to me, the difference in the reports. Whether I’d call it a waste of space to cover it, perhaps, but what would have interested me personally more was the news that the Phils have experienced a decline in season ticket sales of 3k, and ways that might have intertwined with off season business decisions, if at all, or if possible to tell if there might have been any tie in to corporate sponsorship. Maybe that’s more ridiculous stuff also, maybe that’s all there is for at least another couple days.

Having been fortunate enough to have just barely survived perforated intestines, I can tell you the emergency surgery and two follow-up surgeries to put me back together over the course of a year were no fun. I wouldn’t go through that again, even for a top relief pitcher’s salary.

yes agreed it was a good decision. but i personally don’t think it’s a story. aspirin can cause stomach bleeding and it’s legal also. would that have made a story if he said he stopped taking aspirin before joining the phils? common why is something like that even mentioned? all i can say other than what i’ve already whined about is. SO WHAT.
