According to Matt Eddy of Baseball America, the Phillies signed left-handed pitcher Corey Young, 26, last week to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Minor League camp. Young, a Seton Hall alum, comes to the Phillies organization after being released by the Rangers in June 2012. Young spent most of the last four seasons in Double-A Frisco where a dip in velocity from his low 3/4 arm slot contributed to him failing to maintain high strikeout rates that put him on the map as a potential Major League reliever. Young struggled to keep runners off base in Double-A (1.613 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9 IP). Young is likely to start the year in either High-A Clearwater or Double-A Reading.

With the multitude of young arms likely to start out in Reading, logic suggests that Young will start out the season in Clearwater. Also, do we really need another Young?

I was thinking that, too, JCull until I looked at the breakdown: most of the Phillies arms in Reading are righties. He may start the year in Reading by default because of his left-handedness.

He may not play anywhere. His invitation to ST might only be to see if they can do anything with him. A 1.613 WHIP sounds like he’s last resort material, and if he’s unable to learn from big league coaches this spring it wouldn’t be a surprise top see him cut.

The front office must be under the impression that if they throw enough stuff against the wall, sooner or later something will stick.

To George – very possible but there is room for a lefty if you go just by lefty/righty raw numbers.
Bacardi – yeah there are a ton of these guys. Keep an eye on Brandon Erbe. He’s 25 and throws gas. He could sneak on to the Phils 40 man at some point. He’s the standout of these minor league signings.
