Cole Hamels will get the first crack at division rivals Atlanta today in Clearwater. Ethan Martin, Jonathan Pettibone, and Jake Diekman are scheduled to follow.

Line-up notes: Ben Revere is again leading off, this time with Jimmy Rollins also in the line-up, Chase Utley returns after not traveling with the team to Fort Myers, and Ryan Howard is starting his fifth consecutive Spring game. Domonic Brown is hitting sixth while Darin Ruf will rejoin the line-up after sitting out two games in the seven hole. This line-up, excluding the DH, is probably very close to what you will see on Opening Day in Atlanta  barring any surprises.

Line-Up

1. Revere– CF

2. Rollins– SS

3. Utley – 2B

4. Howard – 1B

5. M. Young – 3B

6. Brown– RF

7. Ruf- LF

8. Nix- DH

9. Kratz– C

Here’s the way Cole’ll face them. I’m guessing 50 pitch limit?

    1. Tyler Pastornicky (R) 2B

    2. Jason Heyward (L) RF

    3. Justin Upton (R) LF

    4. B.J. Upton (R) DH

    5. Chris Johnson (R) 3B

    6. Evan Gattis (R) C

    7. Ernesto Mejia (R) 1B

    8. Todd Cunningham (S) CF

    9. Ramiro Pena (S) SS

I see we’re back to Utley and Howard 3 and 4 against the lefty starter Maholm. Just an observation…start reacting to daily lineups right now, and you couyld go nuts.

Here’s what I’ve started to wonder about that I wonder if someone might have an explanation on.. All we’ve heard regarding Delmon Young, the plan is to play him in right field. With Brown asserting himself so far, and possessing a strong arm, and seemingly getting comfty in right by presumably playing there through the rest of ST, why is Young, so long time removed from the OF, and I believe especially RF targeted for RF. Why not just figure him for LF if he does wind up playing regularly?

I’m guessing that that comment from Amaro (regarding D Young being the right fielder in a perfect world), was meant for D. Young. i.e. that some assurance was made that he would get a shot at RF as a condition for signing with the Phils.

Makes sense, and his thinking might have been along the lines of a platoon in left.

I reread that Luzinski post, and did get into more comparison of Luzinski and Burrell than intended. Not a big deal.

This is what I call a line up. Hopefully rollins doesn’t get hung up on being in the 2 hole.

This may show how little I follow Spring Training baseball…when did they start using a DH in NL vs. NL Spring Training games?

Long winded nothing answer to your question. What shows someone doesn’t follow ST closely is when your info was breaking news. Guilty as charged.

Actually, I kinda thought I noticed that last Saturday somehow, but paid it no mind.

But I looked at today’s lineups, and sure enough, every NL V NL has a DH V DH.

Could it have something to do with the WBC I wonder.

This might have been implemented years ago for all I know.

Good inning for Cole. Sure looked like good command.

On the Upton double, for what it’s worth, Revere made a very decent throw back in. One hp, I guess some guys make it on the fly, but if a runner were trying to score on his arm, depending on the jump, they might hve nailed the guy. Tend to watch sdomerthing like that considering Ben’s rep for a poor arm.

Looked like Maholm went up and in as RyHo drills the lefty. Nice to see something other than low and away to The Piece..

Phils are 3-3 and a walk with lefties facing the lefty this inning.

Best inning off a lefthander in Phillies history.

    Some spring stats should count.

Good call by Wheels on Brown playing Heyward’s base hit well, and he made a nice throw too, strong and accurate.

Ruf could have played the single/2 base error better, and made a really weak throw in. Before that (T3), Phils were playing 2011 type defense, the year they led the league in fielding percentage, but still drew criticism for lack of range. In other words, they were at least making the plays they were supposed to make (Young and Hamels made nice plays on grounders).

In Play Run(s)… Ruf delivers an RBI after Michael Young collects an RBI off of the pitcher’s glove and Dom Brown draws a walk. 5-1 Phillies and Maholm is chased from ST action.

credit where it’s due…..a REALLY nice backhand play by M Young helps records Mike Adams first out of the spring.

Bet it feels great to him to be back in competition.

holy damn. Look at the movement on Adams’s pitches. First three pitchs I’ve seen and I’m already impressed.

They’ve done the DH thing in the spring games as long as I can remember. As many ABs to the offense ans possible I would imagine is the reason.

Actually, I found some NL vs. NL Spring Training games from 2010 in which both teams had their pitchers bat and others in which one team used a DH and the other let their pitchers bat. Weird.

Why would you not do DH in the spring?
Even if the AL got rid of it. Id say still use it in ST.

It is a horrible rule though.

    Absolutely ruins the AL.
There is not an ounce of strategy in the games.

How can a baseball fan like the DH? How is it possible?

Thanks for the updates Ken E.
I live in DC and cant watch the game.

Have to wait for reg season and pay for the baseball package.

Well worth it. I watch 2 or 3 games every day.

you’re missing a good one today. Clicking on all cylinders (so far), they seem to be more attentive than yesterdat.

Pettibone’s on now. Lookin’ forward to it.

whole lineup’s doing well, but 3-4-5 kicked in nicely, and that was nice to see after last year.

    Cant wait for opening day.

    I miss Wheeler so much.

I miss him every off season.

By game 3 I will be openly mocking him.
But I have come to enjoy him and just how goofy and silly he is.

As a broadcaster? Not going to the HOF lol
Pretty bad actually but hes ours.

That’s one thing I wish they would replace…our entire tv broadcasting team. I always considered Andy Musser as my least favorite announcer growing up, but I’d gladly take him anyday over the 3 clowns we have in there now. You are being too kind Andrew. Wheeler is terrible.

I really like Franzke… T-Mc and LA are alright… Sarge is ok in small doses. But I’m not a Wheels fan… I think he knows his stuff but he’s just too analytic. Sometimes, you have to let the game do the talking… take a moment to let the viewer/listener hear the sounds of the ballpark (Harry was great at that). If Wheels was reading this, I’d tell him that you don’t have to analyze every single second of every single game. Sometimes, a ball is a ball and it doesn’t matter why it’s a ball and what pitch you think the pitcher is going to throw next because he threw that ball and why you think the batter is having a good at bat… it was off the plate, Wheels.

        Save,

When you say you didn’t like Musser, I wonder if you followed basketnall to the point where you listened to him, and if so, had the same distaste for his work. I think it was pretty widespread feeling, and seemed apparent to me that Andy was a much better basketball announcer. That was one thing I admired about Bill Campbell, he seemed very adept at all 3 sports. I don’t know that his style back then would go over well now (announcers are more personable, or personality driven now).

On Wheeler, I’m amazed, more so by McCarthy and how much he (but both) seems disliked, but he keeps his job. I was never over the top vocal about disliking the two, but I made my feelings clear on occasion. I just git tired of complainiung. My tendency now is if I can’t say something nice about them, I just shut up. I thought Wheels picked up on some action nicely, and gave him some credit today on a Brown defensive play..

I don’t like Sarge at all, but he’s tthe sort of guy that inspires guilt if you criticize him. He is more the master of the obvious than at least 1 female I know. There. I giot out without ripping the whole species.

I should clarify. I didn’t dislike Andy Musser, I just liked him least. We were spoiled with Campbell/Whitey and then Whitey/Harry. I really like LA and Franzke…wish we could them for tv.
