The best part of the old Crazy Eddie commercials back in the day were when Jerry Whatever his name was would have his eyes pop out of his head when he talked of the con man GUARANTEEING the lowest prices. Sure as Eddie’s prieces being insane, I can guarantee you that when Mike Young makes an error in the regualr season, when Dom Brown goes 0-10, the worry warts will be anxious to be quoted on how spring meant nothing. I can also guarantee you part of this thought from Keith Law is the stupidest thing I’ve read all day.

“The Phillies have been messing with his swing since he first emerged as a prospect, but it looks like they might have found a formula, as new hitting coach Wally Joyner has altered the position of Brown’s hands. Execs and scouts are telling me Brown looks noticeably better at the plate, and better able to drive the ball. He’s still well below average on defense, but if he starts hitting and the Phillies don’t try to re-re-rework his swing in late April, he’ll hold on to the left-field job”

It seems crystal clear that Law is basing his conclusion on contact’s vision, but that’s utter nonsense about his defense being well below average. I’m not gonna try to suggest I’m better qualified to draw baseball conclusions than Law, but “well below average.”is laughable. Just the fact that Law mentioned Wally Joyner, and not Steve Henderson, whom Brown gave equal credit to after the catchy being sent an angel attracted attention shows he’s speaking with less insight into Dom’s 2013 play than respect for an opinion requires.

It’s true that Brown failed to call off a second baseman while coming in on a fly ball a couple weeks ago. It’s true that his gun for an arm still could improve on accuracy. Through the handicap of the TV monitor, his reads don’t look as adventurous as the same monitor showed in previous years. But well below average? Even if it’s below average, what the hell does “well” have to do with reality. Never mind that it’s probably somewhere between 20 and 40% improved over previous years. That would be looking at a half full glass, and there’s no reason that uptrend can’t continue.
