2013 Spring Training

Phils Split Sunday Afternoon Games

In Clearwater, the Phillies defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 13-5 led by monstrous homers by Ryan Howard and Domonic Brown. In Sarasota, the rest of the Phils lost 12-3, where Kyle Kendrick (four) and Jeremy Horst (six) combined to give up 10 earned.

The Good

Well, Ryan Howard did this for the home squad:

And Dom Brown did this. Chase Utley reached base three times for the home squad, Jermaine Mitchell hit a two-run triple, Cody Joseph went 2-4 with a double, and Ender Inciarte went 2-3 with two runs scored and a steal. Kevin Frandsen may have had the most complete day however: 2-4, 2B, 3B, 1 RBI, 4 runs scored. The home squad also saw Justin De Fratus, J.C. Ramirez, and Joe Savery combine for four scoreless relief innings with Savery picking up three Ks.

The away team had fewer bright spots but John Mayberry went 2-4 and Michael Young and Freddy Galvis each hit a HR. Reliever Kyle Simon pitched a scoreless frame and Jake Diekman had five Ks in two innings.

The Areas of Opportunity

For the home squad? Not so many. Howard and Brown again man-handled lefty pitching, Utley looked like Utley, and Inciarte has the early makings of a keeper. For the away squad? The pitching completely fell apart. Horst just had an uncharacteristically bad day and struggled with command while Kendrick was the victim of two long balls.
