Cole Hamels (1-8, 4.43) vs. Yovani Gallardo (3-5, 4.79)

TIME: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
Comcast Sportsnet
Weather: 86, Partly Cloudy
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Cole Hamels will look to improve on his 1-8 start this year tonight in the scorching heat against the Brewers. The problem is, the Brewers have a very good offense. They have four players with an OPS of .899 or higher in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura, Ryan Braun, and Aramis Ramirez. Outside of those four, however, the offense isn’t nearly as potent. So all Hamels needs to do is get through those guys, and he’ll be fine. Way easier said than done.

For the Brewers, Yovani Gallardo will get the call, and his season has been similar to Hamels. He hasn’t gotten the run support, but also hasn’t been pitching all that well. He is dominant against the Phillies in his career, going 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA.

Lineup: Revere CF, Hernandez 2B, Rollins SS, Howard 1B, Brown LF, Young RF, Galvis 3B, Quintero 2, Hamels P

GAMEDAY BEER: Yuengling Lager

You know it, and you know it well. You call for it simply by saying “I’ll have a lager.” It’s a staple of the Philadelphia region and really never lets you down. From time to time I’ll order one if a beer list isn’t tickling my fancy. It’s just there. It never wows you. It’s like the Juan Pierre of beers. He won’t blow you away, doesn’t hit for power, but always gives a decent showing when you need him. -Pat Gallen

Ssssssso long Upton, it’s been real.

That’s too bad. All the Phils had to do was score 1 run that frame, and I’d have been rock solid convinced Yo’s performance was the worst since Roger Craig toed the rubber back in the day.

Mr. Hamels has now had leads of 4-0 and 3-0 this year.

And in both instances, the opposition has come back to make it a game, tie it up, and grab the lead.

Some years, it don’t pay to get out of bed.

    Well done, Cole…

How bout a rousing hand for the Fabulous Phils as they come off the field.

Let’s show proper appreciation for that fine inning!

That might be the worst inning I’ve seen this year. Luck or not, that was an awful effort from all around. Cole needs to get it together.

Might be. I guess we tend to block that stuff, so I don’t remember. Maybe one of the KC innings.

It’s amazing how a month ago this was unwatchable.

        I wonder what’s 3 steps below unwatchable.

Ding dong the witch is dead, which oh witch the DURBIN witch is dead. (sung to the song from the Wizard of Oz). Savery is like a savior in this transaction. Durbin was worse than Qualls from “12 which was awful hard to top. Now get MiniMart out of here. Oh, did you see the P’s signed some ex-major leaguer from some “beer” league in the Midwest named Gonzalez. He’s Minimart II if you look up his MLB career stats. Christ is this where our scouts are looking at players just prior to the 2013 draft? What an organization under Rube!!

Delmon Young is a highlight film editor’s dream come true. You can take a break when he plays defense. You can take a break when he comes to the plate. I guess it’s one of those gigs where they just mail you the check.

    What an impressive at bat.

This defense is terrible!! Seriously, that inning in which we gave up 4 runs… None should’ve happened had our defense been average. Get well soon, Chase… And sayonara D Young, go join Durbin somewhere else. Only one hard hit ball, yet we give up 4 earned runs. WTF.

Oh well, we’re still in it. Thanks to Brown, obviously.

Could this be consecutive worst innings of the year?

    Working on it big time.

Nice Rollins! Go far away D Young! Bring Mayberry, bring in Nix! Christ even let Lee hit and play right field! Cmon Phils!
Where have you gone Cole Hamels, we turn our lonely eyes to you!

It’s truly amazing that with some 40k at the game tonight, at least 1 or 2 young kids of conscious age are there for their first ever ball game, and probably having the time of their lives. Watching this game, however offers a 180 perspective. There are things of a baseball nature that keep one’s attention, but so many weak adjectives fir the description of this deflation, and yet some kid must be having the time of their life.

    It’s just weird.

    To this point, anyway.

Hamels and Howard really cost some serious payroll for very little results. I wonder if we could rid ourselves of both if we ate half of that payroll. A lot of pitchers could be 1-8 for a lot less money. Let’s blame it ALL on Amaro and get himout of town as well.

Oh, Bart. C’mon. Hamels is what, 28? He’s pitched a lot of good games this year. You have a lot of money coming off the books, HOPEFULLY at least some extent of good revenues from TV and good if not great attendance. It’s more retool than total rebuild, although that might not be so bad. The whole key is having competence in the driver’s seat. Somewhere in the baseball industry is a solution. Little scary having Montgomery make that decision, but he’ll get some good ideas from people in the game to at least consider.

How bout Dom? Geez, is he hot!

Dom has 12 dingers and probably 40 marriage proposals this month.

    Not too shabby

Hamels season this year is not similar to Cliff Lee’s season last year. Lee had the 10 innings of shutout ball against the Giants and 8 innings of 1 run ball against the Astros and he left with a 2 run lead in the Astros game. In a lot of those games, Lee was pitching deep into the game. Cole hasn’t gotten to 7 innings that much this year. Hamels has had a few games in which he pitched well. Today, he had a lot of bad luck in the 3rd inning but the Brewers had gotten to him for two runs in the 2nd.

Ken, I admit that I am grumpy, but Hamels really does stlink so far. Of course I want him to straighten out. I keep my fingers crossed. Howard. inmy opinion, looks to be going in the wrong direction. Bum knee. Not good

Yeah, I said Hamels has pitched “a lot” of good games this year….that’s overstated. A few is more like it. Some guys you try harder to move, but I can’t believe this club has ANY untouchables.
