Young to Bereavement List, Hernandez to Philly, Utley Out Three More Weeks

Hernandez will get his first taste of the big leagues. (Photo: Jay Floyd)Michael Young has been put on the bereavement list by the Phillies, and Cesar Hernandez has been called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. For those unaware of what such a list means, it’s when a player leaves the team to attend to a serious illness or death in his (or his spouse’s) immediate family. He’ll have to be on the list for at least three days and up to seven.

Young hit his second home run of the season yesterday at Fenway Park, but has been struggling mightily, seeing his average drop to .260.

At Lehigh Valley, Hernandez is hitting .308 with two home runs and 18 RBIs and a .383 on-base percentage. It seems possible he’ll be in the lineup tonight with Freddy Galvis playing third base for Young.

Today on MLB Network Radio, Charlie Manuel said that Chase Utley is having trouble with pain in his oblique/rib cage area, and it hurts when he breathes. Manuel put a time frame of another three weeks or so until Utley could return.

“He’ll be out another three weeks probably,” Manuel said. “He has kind of a tear in his ribcage, hurts when you breathe, and if you’re not careful, you keep tearing it.”

That could keep him out through most of June.
