2013 Gameday

RHP Roy Halladay (3-4, 7.81 ERA) vs RHP Jeff Samardzija (8-11, 4.03 ERA)

TIME: 2:20 ET, Wrigley Field
TV:
Comcast SportsNet
Weather: 89, clear
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Ryne Sandberg returns to Wrigley Field today for the first time ever as a big league manager.  The Hall of Fame second baseman turned Phillies manager spent 15 years on the North Side of Chicago, earning 10 All-Star berths and nine consecutive gold gloves for the Cubs after coming over from the Phillies in a lopsided trade that netted the Phils only Ivan DeJesus.  Wrigley is always a festive atmosphere for day games and today should be no different.  Expect a warm welcome for Ryno, whose No. 23 was retired by the Cubs in 2005.

On the field, today marks the second major league start for Roy Halladay since returning from surgery.  Doc was solid in his first start back last Sunday, surrendering only four hits and two earned runs over six innings and earning the win against the Diamondbacks, which was only his third of the season.  Halladay will become a free agent after the season and has expressed interest in sticking around in Philly.  Each of his remaining starts is critical in determining what the 36-year-old has left in the tank.

The Phils had shown signs of life lately, winning seven of nine before ultimately splitting a four-game series with the Mets.  They’ll look to get back on track this afternoon at Wrigley Field, which tends to be an unpredictable environment for baseball weather-wise.  The forecast calls for sun and temperatures around 90, so if the wind is blowing out this could be an exciting one.  Halladay is opposed by Cubs fireballer Jeff Samardzija, who has tailed off significantly after a promising start to the season.  Samardzija has an ERA over five in July and August.

Lineup: Young 3B, Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Brown LF, Ruiz C, Ruf 1B, Mayberry RF, Bernadina CF, Halladay P

Gameday Beer: Smithwicks Irish Red Ale

Smithwicks has been around forever yet it never gets old. This red ale is one of the most common Irish brews and is perfect if you are in that Irish mood and want something lighter than a Guinness and a bit more than a Harp lager. It might not jump out at you, but you know that you are going to get a consistently solid beer, and a lot of times, that is enough.

That Rizzo shot was a bitch. Killed a pretty good inning, , although Castro had 2 hard hit balls.
The wind helped, but it’s a homer.

49 pitches for Doc as we go to the 4th. It’s a base building day today. A few sharp pitches along the way, but mostly, his command is pretty iffy.

    I suspect it’s a struggle to finish the 5th.

The problem now might well be thqat Doc wants to get his pitches in, and will throw through this inning, or another 20. I guess there’s a point to it, but it’s just a nothing day. It’s jjst no fun to watch.

Not a big deal in the 1 game, and frankly, even bigger picture, this guy’s owed a lot of leeway.

Fortunately, when it’s over for him, and it’s not til next spring at rthe earliest, he’ll let the world know it while they’re still debating it.

Boy, 76 pitch 47 strike final count. JUST a bit out of character, as Bob Uecker might say.

So do you have him go against the Nats Wednesday? Absolutely. It’s The Man’s call, and he’ll keep battling, and we’ll see where the upside is for this season when he’s done.

Good poll question at this rate…who has been less effective, the offense or Doc? A kissing your sister exercise if 1 ever exsisted.

If, bvy chance, Doc gets the win out of this inning, it’d be the baseball event of the century. Check that millennium. 5-3. But it is Pigley, you never know.

The most shocking thing about Halladays start is that he was picked up by so many people in fantasy. His last start was helped by some great catches or its not a quality start.

He has a fast ball in the mid 80s. He may turn into Greg Maddux at some point but it wont be over night and it wont be this season.

It is embarrassing for Doc for this to be on the major league level.
Let him finish out the year in the minors.

I wouldn’t have wanted to see Carlton pitch like this either.

At least if Ruben is still the GM after this year even he cant over pay for Halladay. Could he?
    That’s a good thing.

I guess my Mets bet will go for the entire year.
Considering they lost Harvey and Byrd that’s pretty sad.

The Mets roster is worse than the Astros at this point.

Andrew, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the MILB year is like over.

In fact, I mean I don’t know the exact date, but today I believe would have been his last minor rehab start.

And it’s really only embarrassing if it drags out. Today, as a sinle entity wasn’t fun. Embarassing? Depends on your levl of patience I guess.

schedule actually looks pretty full through next weekend just glancing at the milb website. So I was off by a few-several days.

Dale Sveum earning brownie points for bullpen management. Ridiculous patience.

Please stop putting the Moron Armaro Jr. on TV.

Its bad enough just thinking that he still has a job.
But seeing him makes it worse.

    Ken

Has a player ever hit for the cycle coming off the bench?

Franzen has a shot especially if we go extra innings!
    Got the triple and homer.

Not from what I can tell. But Sadaharuh Oh did it once.

But none of Willie, Mickey and The Duke did either.

Unless we count Stargell and Mickey Vernon.

Hell, at the rate th nech is being used, we might see 2 cycle contenders and blow the record book apart.

Looking forward to only two more years of posts just like this (unless he’s extended)
      ;-)

I don’t think anyone’s done it after coming off the bench, so that would be a first.

Also, though not as noteworthy, but it would be only the 4th time it’s been done by someone batting 9th.

We’ll put that down as a loss of an opportunity for Jimmy. Up 1, RISP, an insurance run would have been nice.

Personally, I don’t see this 9th as easy. Not with Rizzo and Nate both scheduled. The shadows help, but they might not be enough.

I am hoping its only a month or so left.

You cant fire a GM mid season.

Remember with the Mets Minaya fired Randolph mid season then his canning came at the end of the year.

I find it almost impossible to believe Amaro could retain his job at this point.

The announcers for other teams when Charlie was fired where talking about the press conference and Amaro sitting there and who was to blame for the mess.

Charlie is still respected. Amaro is not.

Amaro will never GM again after this. Charlie may manage next year even though hes the old man.

    OK enough with Amaro.

    Back to my original point.
I try to put him out of my mind and its tough when he is on the TV.

    6-5 Phils!

When do you think his tenure with the Phillies ends?

I am gonna guess a day or 2 after this season ends.

In case there is no post game thread.

3 minutes, 14 seconds. The newscenter on your radio dial’s tradition lives on.

I told you yesterday what my invaluable opinion was. Do you think EVERYBODY around here repeats themselves?

I have a short term memory issue.

    Don’t make fun.

It may be the Jack Daniels but it may be something else too.

You can diagnose me Dr. Ken
