Philadelphia Phillies (53-67) vs Los Angeles Dodgers (70-50)dodgers_logo

Kyle Kendrick (10-9, 4.48 ERA) vs Clayton Kershaw (11-7, 1.88 ERA)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park

TV: Comcast SportsNet

Weather: 88, sunny

Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Phillies will get their second crack at earning their first win under Ryne Sandberg on Saturday when they take on the Dodgers in the middle game of their three-game set. After losing last night, the Phillies have now lost three straight and sit at 15 games under .500.

A struggling Kyle Kendrick, amid his worst stretch of the year, will toe the rubber for the Phillies. In his last three starts Kendrick has gone just 12 1/3 innings, and has allowed at least five runs in each start, swelling his ERA from 3.96 to 4.48 over that stretch.

The Phillies right-hander faced the Dodgers back in June, suffering a loss after allowing four runs on ten hits in six innings of work out at Dodger Stadium.

The Phillies will be facing perhaps the toughest pitcher they will face all year-Cy Young candidate Clayton Kershaw. The Dodger southpaw is vying with Roger Clemens to hold the lowest ERA in the National League since Greg Maddux posted a 1.63 in 1995. Kershaw is coming off a stretch in which has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five straight outings.

However, Kershaw has seen his fair share of the Phillies and has never had much success against them. In eight career starts, he is 0-4 with a 4.31 ERA. That is his highest ERA against any team in the National League over his career, and the highest against any team in baseball that he has had more than two games against. At Citizen’s Bank Park he has been even worse, posting a lofty 5.96.

Carlos Ruiz has easily had the most success against Kershaw in his career, hitting at a .429 clip with a homer and five RBI against him. Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley have also homered off the lefty, but have posted .207 and .238 averages against him, respectively.

Lineup: Rollins SS, Frandsen 2B, M. Young 3B, Brown LF, Ruf RF, Wells CF, Mayberry 1B, Kratz C, Kendrick P

Gameday Beer: Otter Creek Copper Aledownload

This medium bodied beer is a very versatile and refreshing brew that goes well with all types of ballpark food, especially stuff off the grill. It’s got a sweet, toasty, crisp taste that is perfect for either a chilly night or hot summer day watching the game. With a day game today fire up the grill and kick back with one of these and you’ll be set.

For a team that bottomed out at 12 games under .500. the Dodgers have advanced pretty nicely. So much so, that in the National Baseball Consolation League, they are now ranked as THEE favorite to win the 2013 World Series. Not Toronto, not Detroit, not St, Louis, not Atlanta, Pretty nice advance with Brian Wilson a short time away from adding depth to a formidable bullpen.

Mentioning Kershaw shortcomings against the Phils in the past is all part of the setting the story . Asked to start game one of the ’08 divvy series at the Bank pretty much offered a definition of where the bottom of the hill would be in his career climb as he was 20 at the time. off a potent, but not Jose Fernandez like 8-8 year. As the Phils were a representative contending club even through 2012 with a small stretch pointed toward last year, that subject is now all but irrelevant. If you think the Phils are mentionable with those Philly units, you probably are the sort that judges books by their covers.

Kershaw is having one of these Pedro/Maddux/Guidry type storybook seasons. At age 25, no less. If any Phillie gets 2 hits off him tonight, you won’t have to extend much thought to what that player’s career night was. Sandberg probabkly tried to negotiate when Ruben offered him the gig. “I’ll take it, Ruben, but can I start Monday?”

    LA by at least 5.

That’s gotta be quite the adrenaline rush when you’re as good as this guy, and get back out on the mound for the first time in 5 days for game competition. Just the adrenaline should get the leadoff guy out, and Jimmy cooperated.

One of the few low marks this garbajj team hasn’t hit this year is being no-hit. Will this be the night?

On a realted night. I wish the team would ban Gary ” worst announcer in baseball” Mathews from calling this team the fightin’ feeeeelz. .

I’ll say they don’t, but juswt that you have to think about it says a lot.

Two innings in, and they have gotten away with 2 errors and only yielded a run. It’s a little hard to envision it as just being a case of hoping they settle in. We’ll see how KK does 2nd time through the lineup.

Fransden and Young both had decent AB’s vs CK, resulting in outs. I wonder how many other guys will reach that plateau.

Bill Singer, he quickly answered, thinking he nailed the trivia question correctly for the first time in 6 seasons.

1970 no-no for the Dodgers V The Phils

9 up, 9 down for the Phils and very few pulled balls. This is not a pitcher you wonder about as he faces them a 2nd and 3rd time. Uaually, they get STRONGER.

Froma not necessarily reliable source, in the 40-8 run, CK has lost 5 of the games, or they lost 5 of his starts. With “normal” run support, the Dodgers would be 43-5. But that’s an if, as in iof the Dodgers got outscored in the 48 games, their record would be something like 0-48.

Well, they’re hangin.’ Doesn’t seem imminent that they’ll fall apart.. KK’s doing well.

I don’t know hoew they’re gonna score 2 runs, even if they shut LA down, but between playing better and LA running the bases sloppily, at least it’s close.

Brian Wilson’s in the house, but not activated yet.

Big race card at Pocono downs tonight.

I am watching that on line and this site always messes up the computer if you try to do anything else on line at the same time.

I wonder if they will bet you bet on a no hitter in vegas.

Ryno should have said no thanks.

    Mets pulling away :(

Do have the Phils on the TV although Id rather bet on a 3 legged horse than the Phillies.

Rest of the way…mpre Phillie hits or errors?

As the self appointed official scorer, the Brown pickoff counts as an error. We are tied at a hit and an error in this important hits or errors category. My question, my rules.

Dodgers are 29-0 when scoring first since June 22. But 0-0 in that situation when D Brown has a base hit.

Good job by Sarge tonight. He concluded that Dom’s pickoff was a mental error, and just revealed the Phils offense needs to get clicking.

I think Sarge will make a wonderful replacement for Sandberg someday.

I wonder if he talks to the players like they’re 5 year olds, too.

They might break precedent and interrupt the game in the middle of the 8th to award Errorberry a Gold Glove award.

3 misplays tonight. Good guy, Phillies alum soon.

I’m grateful to the Phils for doing about as live a reenactment as mathematically possible to reenact the fabulous 23 game lssing streak of 1961. It occurs to me that the payroll of that memorable laughing stock ran a payroll of about 400,000.

At a payroll now of somewhere in the city linits of 160,000,000, I see the merit of spending extra money to increase value. Every player on this team makes more than the combined payroll of that team. And I swear, this team MIGHT be barely better than that. Three years later, that team won the pennant minus 10 games. I wonder where this team will be 3 years from now.

It actually looks like CK has a decent shot at a CG SO on <100 pitches. 79 thru 7.

Stras threw his last Sunday on 99 tosses.

The story about how few pitches the Phils have seen this year's gotten some play today, including on the telecast.

The 2 shutouts on sub 100 7 days apart plays right into that. Delmon was probably responsible for some of that, but even with Utley and Brown, they're near thye bottom of the sport, and I believe it's a whopping 2700 fewer pitches than Red Sox hitters have seen.

    Hark! A double by Wells.

Like last night, they got dangerously close t.o getting right back in the game, just couldn’t do it. Hopefully, against lesser ballclubs the rest of the year, they can execute in those situations, and this will be less frustrating than this recent run.

But they had ‘em EXACTLY where they wanted them, nd a right guy at the plate.

But, the Dodgers are not soft comp.

Winning seems to have a way of following Juan Uribe around.
