Phillies Tab Martin to Start Friday

Ethan Martin, brought to Philadelphia in the Shane Victorino-to-LA trade last summer, will make his major league debut on Friday against the Atlanta Braves. Martin was named the #3 prospect in the Phillies organization prior to the 2013 season by our minor league expert, Jay Floyd.

Martin, 24, has had a solid year at Lehigh Valley going 11-5 with a 4.12 ERA in 21 starts.  In 115 2/3 innings, Martin has given up 94 hits while striking out 107 and walking 67. The scouting report on Martin is that he’s a hard thrower at 6-2, 195. However, I’ve read/heard his fastball lacks a little movement, although his slider is pretty far along.

This could also mean Cliff Lee is not ready to start as he’s been dealing with a stiff neck. Lee’s ailment is not considered serious.

Here is an interview Ian did with Ethan just prior to the 2013 season:

I posted in another thread that I would like to see done of the young starters brought up to pitch, which is a good thing since the Phillies are pretty much out of it…but against the Braves?! Damn, Ruben! That’s a baptism by fire!

You never know with the Braves K or HR offense. Maybe Martin could make them go on one of their cold streaks again.

Sometimes scheduling gets in the way of what team you want a rookie to face. The Braves a difficult lineup, but also one that strikes out a lot. Just be glad Martin isn’t facing the Tigers or Cards in his first start.

Actually Martin is from Athens, GA so he is going up against his hometown team which is cool for him. I would have prefered to see Greg Smith get a shot, in eight starts this season for LHV he is 5-0 with a 0.75 ERA and only 8 walks in almost 50 innings. Now he is not a prospect at age 30, but that kind of performance really deserves a call up.

Glad I paid $70 to see a minor league pitcher start.

What part of a 4.12 era and 1.4 WHIP counts as solid?

Those numbers are not great, but in his last 10 starts he as been much better posting a record of 6-3 with an ERA of 2.80. Not to mention he is also on the 40 man roster so it made sense to give the kid a shot. He throws really hard getting his fastball up to around 97 mph and he has a good breaking ball. His command is the issue, but he is a very good young pitcher and he deserves a shot. Who else would you rather have start? Valdes, Cloyd or Martin? I think Martin deserves his shot, we need to see what he has because if he cannot make it as a starter they need to work on transitioning him to the pen.
