Phillies Nation Player Review: Tyler Cloyd

IMG_1364He’s gone now, but looking back at Tyler Cloyd’s tenure with the Phillies, I’m sure he’d be upset with how his time in Phiadelphia ended.

It began with a bit of promise; a kid who tore up minor league hitting in 2012 would be summoned to the majors late last year. No one thought of Cloyd as a heralded prospect, more of a stopgap for a team hoping to get a few innings from a guy they likely knew didn’t have the greatest stuff in the world.

Fast forward to 2013 and Cloyd was still trying to turn heads at Lehigh Valley. Except things were completely different this time around.

In 2012, Cloyd burst onto the scene going 15-1 with a ridiculous 2.26 ERA between Reading and LV. In 2013, Cloyd allowed 25 more hits in roughly 30 fewer innings. His ERA spiked to 4.71.

Cloyd was called up to make his first start of the season on May 10 and in his first two outings resembled the pitcher who had stunned the minor league world a year earlier. After that, it was downhill.

Cloyd would finish the season in the majors allowing 26 earned runs over his final 15 innings pitched in the month of September. Just like that, a whirlwind 2012 was completely forgotten and Cloyd was out the door.

On October 2, the soft-tossing righty was claimed by the Cleveland Indians.

Grade: D – It was great to see a guy take off the way he did in 2012, but it was a quick affair. Cloyd showed his true colors when he was called up.
