The Phillies Nation Top 100: #51 Dode Paskert

The Phillies Nation Top 100 continues today with #51. Our mission is to assess the Top 100 Phillies players of all time using impact to the Phillies, individual achievement, team achievement, traditional stats, and analytics as our criteria. The list was compiled by Ian Riccaboni and Pat Gallen with input from the rest of the Phillies Nation staff.

From this point forward, each weekday, we will reveal two Phillies from the PN Top 100 in separate posts. To view the 2008 iteration of the list of Greatest Phillies of All Time as compiled by Tim Malcolm, please click here.

Please check back tomorrow morning for #50.

#51 – Dode Paskert

Years: 1911-1917

.272/.357/.374, 28 HR, 158 SB in 4020 PA

Previous Rank: New to Rankings

fWAR Phillies Rank: 36th among position players, 52nd among Phillies

Signature Series: Hit .315/.420/.413 with 36 steals and two homers in 1912, finishing 14th in MVP voting

Paskert may be the highest ranked player that you have never, ever heard of. Paskert was one of the offensive hinge pins of the first successful era in Phillies history, hitting primarily third and playing center field for a set of seven teams that went a combined 582-484 (54.60%) behind the big arms of Grover Cleveland Alexander and Erskine Mayer. Paskert and Pirates’ center fielder Max Carey were the two marquee center fielders in the National League, playing the second-most games among NL center fielders in that time, scoring the second-most runs, driving in the fourth-most RBIs, and stealing the third most bags.

Despite Paskert having some of  his best years surrounding the Phillies’ first pennant, Paskert fought through an injury-plagued 1915 campaign and stumbled in the 1915 World Series (.158/.200/.158 in 20 PA). Paskert’s name is littered throughout the MLB history books, with the 52nd-most outfield assists of all-time from center field and 95th among outfielders in putouts. For his role in the Phillies’ first successful run in their history, and his place as a top center fielder in the National League, Paskert earns a spot in the Phillies Nation 100.
