2014 Game Recaps

Revere’s 8th Inning Single Helps Phillies Avoid Sweep

Ben Revere singled home Domonic Brown in the eighth inning for the only run of the afternoon, giving the Phillies a 1-0 win to narrowly avoid a sweep by the Atlanta Braves.

Burnett Solid Despite Hernia

-Burnett began the outing looking a bit rusty, yet still induced five groundball outs over the first two innings. That’s exactly what the Phillies paid for when they brought Burnett to Philadelphia. Last season with Pittsburgh, Burnett was third in the majors with a 2.33 ground ball-to-fly ball ratio. All told, Burnett got 13 groundball outs to just one flyball out on the day. A fine outing.

-His line: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K.

-Phillies starters in the series allowed just three earned runs over 22 innings and did not pick up a victory. Not sure I have to go into much more detail than that. Bullpen blows the first game, the offense disappears in games two and three.

Offense, Where Art Thou?

-Alex Wood looks like a player, eh? He did lose his shutout in the eighth inning, but certainly looks like a hell of an arm. In eight innings, he allowed one run on eight hits, striking out seven while walking just one.

Bowa don’t know. (Crashburn Alley)

-The offense was non-existent again. Yes, they won the game. No, it wasn’t pretty. Is the weather playing a role? Perhaps. Dom Brown hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning on Monday and the Phillies managed to go 17 innings without crossing the plate. They’ll need to be more consistent on what will be a tough road swing upcoming.

-Revere had three hits to lead the Phillies. He also grounded into a double play on a well-hit one-hop smash to shortstop. Revere’s average is now up to .288.

Other Stuff

-Jonathan Papelbon looked great in a 1-2-3 ninth innings, saving his fourth game in a row after blowing his first chance in Texas.

Replay was used in the fifth inning after an Andrelton Simmons stolen base. After Simmons slid past the bag he was called safe by second base umpire Bill Welke, even with Jimmy Rollins’ lunging tag attempt. Replays showed that Rollins got him on the torso before Simmons hand reached the back-side of the bag. I’m glad they got it right, but the .GIF above tells you all you need to know about replay right now.

-Maybe a road trip is just what the doctor ordered. After all, they played pretty well in Texas and Chicago, so the warm weather of L.A. and Phoenix could do them good. Hopefully it’s not crappy in Denver for the weekend series beginning tomorrow.
