A.J. Burnett extended the Phillies winning streak to five games, tossing a complete game surrendering just one run and scattering seven hits and one walk en route to a 5-1 win. The Phillies are now just 3.5 games out of first place in the NL East.

Burnett Does it For Grandma

Tonight’s game was extra special for Burnett who noted it was the first time he was ever able to pitch in front of his grandmother in person. Burnett was living in the low 90′s the entire game and credited Chooch with a mid-game adjustment away from the breaking ball to the change-up to improve his effectiveness. Burnett used the change-up effectively, forcing 15 ground balls and lowered his ERA to 3.89.

Bats String Together Hits at Just the Right Time

Burnett surrendered a single to Matt Holliday in the third that allowed Matt Carpenter to score. But Burnett would ensure that the Phillies got the run right back. Burnett smashed a double off the center field wall to drive in John Mayberry, who was on second with a double. Jimmy Rollins would hit a double of his own as the next batter to give the Phillies a 2-1, a lead they would not surrender.

Marlon Byrd would hit his 12th homer in the sixth. Byrd would be followed by a Domonic Brown double, who would be driven in by a Mayberry single. A sac fly by J-Rol ran the score up to 5-1, where it would conclude.

It is worth noting that the game was delayed about an hour for storms in the St. Louis area. There was a giant swarm of moths that appeared late in the game, around the seventh inning.  Oddly, this did not effect the pitchers, at least from a run-scoring perspective.

The Phillies go for their sixth-straight, and series, win tomorrow as they send Cole Hamels to the mound against Adam Wainwright at 4:10 PM.

The Phils have been playing well in a facets of the game right now. Can this pitching staff keep it up? Saturday will be a big test for this offense against Wainwright. And can Cole shut down a cards offense that is just due to score some runs? I always believed that this team was capable of playing better then they played first / months of the year.

LOL ruben is setting no one straight.

If he was half way competent the team would be 5 games up in this sorry division.

If this run gets him job security that will be too bad.

    But

Not what I want to say.

This is fun. The team is on a roll and in this division anything is possible.

I am going to have fun with it and everyone else should too.

    Go Phils!

2 games ahead of the Mets!!!!!

I’m with Bacardi need to get above .500 before getting really excited.
However, the last 5 games have been fun.
    Let’s Go Phils!

      are you a corpse?

Although you did admit the last 5 have been fun and say they had to get above sea level before getting really excited, gimme a break.

So much pain and frustration from so often in the first 60 games has subsided, and to me, the only proper emotion is its EXCITING as ALL HECK, you just hope it somehow, some way continues. And the truth is, there’s better than a zero chance that it can. And I find it hard to believe that ANYBODY who reads this board isn’t EXCITED, not just having fun the last 5 games. Not only have they won, but they have halved the deficit to first place

Realistically, you just enjoy it while it lasts. But I can’t believe that any living Phillies fan isn’t EXCITED that isn’t overusing the usual defense mechanisms to guard against disappointment.

I’m not picking on ya, Robotnik, but when a second person wrote about getting excited when they reach .500, that was it. Maybe they aren’t a legit contender til they hit .500, IF then, but they’re winning, and in a lot of ways, it’s HOW they’re winning. Guess I’ll calm down and just speak for myself. This has been a freaking awesome week. With Hamels today.

If the Phils were in the Central would be 10 out.
If they were in the west theyd be 8 games out.

    This is a gift people.

    Enjoy it!!!!!!

I have a feeling at any given time the Phils could get shutout in 12 of 15 games or lose 18 of 20.

But heck they might also win 18 of 20.

    Have fun.

And mark it down the Nationals have deep problems they aren’t running away.

So 85 wins might get the division!

    Go phils!!!!!!!!

They are not going to win 18 of 20. Now that, even I would put money on. :-)

This is an illusion and you know it. Not one 30+ year old regular position player has been injured this season. What odds would you give on that happening for the whole season? Because that’s the only way this team wins 85 games.

Lefty, it may well be an illusion, but I woldn’t consider it a miracle to get through the rest of the season with no more significant injuries. They’ve already endure Hamels and Lee’s down time, so they haven’t been completely injury-free.

I didn’t figure they would make it this far into the season without one of the regulars hitting the dl… So who knows lefty

I’ve always been positive Schmenkman, you know that. But IMO – it’s just time to accept the reality. I didn’t want to accept it in 2012 when things started going flat, or last year when it just plain went south after the AS break.
That said, and lord willing, I still won’t miss a single game! (some DVR’d)
        GO PHILS!
