Phillies Call Up Grady Sizemore

The Phillies have called up center fielder Grady Sizemore following their four-game sweep of the Brewers. To make room on the roster, David Buchanan was sent down to triple-A Lehigh Valley. Buchanan will keep his normal pitching schedule, even with being sent down.

Sizemore hit .216/.288/.324 for the Red Sox in 2014 before being designated for assignment. Prior to being called up, he was hitting .289/.360/.378 for the IronPigs.

Sizemore has a history of injuries, but used to be one of the better center fielders in MLB, and had the potential to be an all-time great. Sadly, injuries derailed his career. Included in his MLB resume is three All-Star appearances, two Gold Gloves, and a Silver Slugger award. He had a 30/30 season in 2008.

The Phillies outfield is in desperate need of help (especially with a banged up Ben Revere), and Sizemore could potentially be an answer–or he could provide depth should the Phillies explore trading Marlon Byrd.

Cliff Lee was transferred to the 60-day DL, but he’ll likely be ready to start just after the all star break.

They had to bring him up or lose him didn’t they?

Probably only until Lee is activated, unless Sizemore totally flops.

Good callup. The rebuild needs to start. Eventually Gwynn is dumped. He’s not an MLB level player. Revere has an outside chance of making it as he’s showed the last 10-15 games.

Can’t make sense of Ryno’s decision to pinch hit .230 hitter Hernandez (.077 in July) after Rupp’s double in the 8th and burn Revere as a pinch runner. All you need is a single there, and Revere has the second highest BA on the team and has been hitting well over .300 in June and July. Everyone knows what the guy isn’t good at; that’s something he is good at. It’s not the first time I’ve gotten the impression that there isn’t a lot of Revere love in the Phillies’ dugout.

Buchanan is rewarded for his best outing in the majors with a bus ticket to Lehigh Valley. Go figure. (smile) I understand the situation with Sizemore and the deadline for bringing him up. However, I ask why not someone like Andres Blanco be send down? Is there really a need for him? Right now he is collecting cobwebs on the bench. And Buchanan is a good insurance back-up if Lee has a setback with his arm. By the way, what is the situation with Darin Ruf? I do think he is close to coming off the DL.

Baseball is a funny game no matter how you would look at it. With Buchanan shutting down the Brewers, the Phillies’s four game win sweep in the NL Central divisiion leaders’ home ballpark is quite remarkable. The division race there is tightening with the Cards and Reds narrowing the gap behind the Brewers. Now if the Phillies can carry forward their momentum to CBP where they currently are 18-27, we could have some excitement for the remainder of the season (smile).

I think with the All star break coming they might want to keep Buchanan on the same schedule pitching every 5 days…. Just my opinion, I could be wrong

^^^This. However, unless one of the starters is traded, it will probably be September until he is back.

I think we all saw this coming at the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012! It is amusing to me how Rube I keeps defending himself and saying he just didn’t see this coming!!! What was he looking at!!! You know you can’t see with your head’s in the sand!! But the Phils have drafted better then the past few years with higher picks because they haven’t signed high FA’s lately!!! I think Pap was the last. Anyway Rube’s looking not so good right now with his pants around his ankles!!!! And then telling everyone that we are the ones out of touch!!! It’s time to get rid of Howard!!! One of the worst contracts in Phillies history!!! Not Howard’s fault but that one’s on Rube!!! Two of Rubes biggest trades were some of the worst!! The Lee trade to Seattle!!! Pence trade to Giants!!! He got nothing in return!! Nothing!!! And this Spring he kept telling us that the old would be new and produce and he’s still telling us the old is good!!!! What I noticed in the Brewers series is the Brewers played terrible and their pitching was the worst. Yesterday Howard finally hit a ball out of the park which was right down Broadway!!! You don’t need to throw Howard a strike!!! Anyway I may be wrong here but they are Light Years away from getting this thing back!!!!!!! I can’t see how Rube keeps his job!

@Dale, “And this Spring he kept telling us that the old would be new and produce and he’s still telling us the old is good!!!!”

Actually he turned out to be right about that (except for Howard).

      Anyway, that’s a lot yelling!!!!

Sure , it makes sense to send down Buchanan since he just pitched yesterday and won’t be needed now til after the break. Even though Gwynn sucks and really shouldn’t be on the team, might as well keep him for a few more games for outfield depth since Buchanan isn’t needed anyway.

Seems like the obvious and only correct move to me with only three games left until the next game- the following weekend, July 18th. (smile)

Howard frustrates me, a lot…. I noticed yesterday he didn’t start hitting until the game was more than likely already in the bag, like all the pressure was off him and he could finally hit

He hit the ground rule double to extend the lead to 3-1 that was clutch. I’ve seen him drive in a lot of clutch runs over the years..so don’t start with that now. His contract is what it is and not his fault

What did I say about his contract?

Howard has always hit better in close games.

Margin is within 4 runs: .903 OPS
Margin is 5 or more runs: .810 OPS

      Within 2 runs: .931 OPS
3 or more runs: .806 OPS

That pattern has remained even in recent years.

Thanks schmenk, I was wondering what the actual numbers were, I just didn’t ask for some reason, lol

The thing people sometimes fail to realize is that when a player (like Howard, for instance) has a lot of RBIs in a blowout game, that game is sometimes only a blowout because he does have all those RBIs. Without one player whacking in a bunch of other guys, that game might be a close one, stressing the starter and using up a lot of relief pitchers and pinch hitters.

These moves make a lot of sense. Sizemore would be lost if not on the roster by the all-star break, and Buchanan would have his throwing schedule completely loused up by that same break. He can be on the same schedule in AAA. Lee was moved to the 60 day DL so that a 40 man roster spot could be opened for Sizemore without having to DFA anyone.

There will be more moves after the break, I’m certain.

I didn’t know lee was on the 60 day dl

He was just moved there yesterday, and since it’s retroactive, all it does is free up a 40-man roster spot. He’s still scheduled to return immediately after the break.

I guess I missed that, thanks schmenk

Gwynn Jr should be the first move. If he doesnt clear waivers it wouldnt be a huge loss. We can call up Castro probably get the same production.
