Byrd’s Homer Lifts Phils Over Nats

2014 Game Recaps

With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, Marlon Byrd launched a solo home run–his 21st on the year–to right field, which ended up being the eventual game winner.

Phillies starter Robert Hernandez tossed eight strong innings, allowing just one run (unearned), and five hits. Jonathan Papelbon saved his 26th game of the year. The win guarantees at least a split in this four game series with the first-place Nationals, something I don’t think anyone expected. Here are some other notes:

Sizemore Stays Hot

Grady Sizemore collected two more hits Friday night, upping his slash line numbers to .344/.382/.484. Of course, it’s a very small sample still, but impressive nonetheless. He’s arguably been the Phillies best hitter since he was called up. If this is a sign of him rejuvenating his career, it could be really good news for the Phillies.

A Horse With Two Names

Over his last four starts, Roberto Hernandez (and Fausto Carmona) has thrown 28.2 innings while allowing just six earned runs (1.88 ERA). He’s been a “horse”, Ricky Bo likes to say, as he’s thrown 8, 5.2, 7, and 8 innings in those starts. This has helped the Phillies a ton in resting some guys in the bullpen.

Up Next:

A.J. Burnett and Jordan Zimmerman will square off tomorrow, as the Phils and Nats play the third of this four game series at 7:05. If the Phillies win, it’ll be the first series win in Washington since this time in 2012.

Any reason why there wasn’t trade talk involving Roberto Hernandez. Several contenders need another starting pitcher.

Yeah amaro wanted two top prospects and a year supply of sunflower seeds and bubble gum for his players… A couple deals were close but just couldn’t get hammered out at the last minute….
I think it was greedy to ask for the bubble gum, personally… Lol

Hogey: If I recall correctly, you suggested the team grab Grady Sizemore off the wires almost the second he became available.

        Nice call.

They probably would of just got some marginal C talent for him. We have a ton of those in the minors as it is. Lee went down so they need the starter anyways. Still time for a trade. Fausto although has been good lately is a fifth stater teams are probably looking more #2′s to push them over the edge.
