2014 Game Recaps, Posts

Dave Buchanan gave up just two runs over five innings, but the Phillies spoiled his outing in the sixth. They came back in the eighth to tie it, but eventually lost it in the 12th, 6-5. The game took nearly five full hours. Here are a few notes:

- Jimmy Rollins collected his 450th stolen base of his career after he swiped a bag in the first inning. He stole another bag in the eighth.

- Ben Revere was held hitless, lowering his batting average to .312.

- The sixth inning was an abysmal one for the Phillies all around. Mario Hollands was on the mound, and gave up three runs with the help of two errors. Domonic Brown threw a ball past Cody Asche to allow a run, and then Asche threw a ball away to allow in an additional two runs 2 batters later.

- Ryan Howard hit his 19th home run of the year on a ball that barely cleared the left field wall.

- The Phillies bullpen came into tonight’s game at 2nd in the NL in K%. They continued to strike guys out, as they K’d eight in seven innings.

UP NEXT: The Phillies and Cardinals will play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon, with Jerome Williams going for the Phils and Justin Masterson going for the Cardinals.

I know there is a lot of you on here that think Ryno is the second coming. But I think he has to go. Some of his baseball decisions baffle me. And not that this team would be playoff consideration this year with some else running this club. Want specific examples of his mid management reply and I will give plenty

Sandberg blew that game in the 8th. Phillies had 4 straight guys reach base with 2 runs across. With no outs, game tied, men on 1st and 2nd, he pinch hits Blanco for Ruf. And then has Blanco bunt. It totally killed all of the Phillies momentum.

“- Jimmy Rollins collected his 450th stolen base of his career after he swiped a bag in the first inning. He stole another bag in the eighth.”

And with that, Rollins became only the 8th player in history with 450 steals and 800 extra base hits, joining this motley crew:

Barry Bonds, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Paul Molitor, Rickey Henderson, Joe Morgan, Ed Delahanty.

Had this been a down year for JRoll I think the argument against HOF status would have had merit. But after this season, both at bat and in the field, it’s getting a lot harder to make that case. Agree?

It looks to me like it’s not out of the realm of possibility that before his career is over, he surpasses Delahanty, Molitor, and Bonds. That would put him in the 500/800 rarified air of only Cobb, Wagner, Henderson and Morgan. If that, plus splendid defense, and an MVP are not HOF worthy, I’m not sure what is.
