Phillies Trade Hernandez to Dodgers

Trades, Transactions

As the world waits to see if the Cubs and Phillies find a match for Cole Hamels, the Phillies wasted no time in dealing a different starting pitcher.

According to the Phillies, they have traded pitcher Roberto Hernandez to the Los Angeles Dodgers for two players to be named later. Hernandez, who turns 34 on the 30th, was 6-8 with a 3.87 ERA, his lowest since 2010. Hernandez did, however, have major control issues throughout the season, ranking dead-last in MLB among qualified pitchers in BB/9 IP. Hernandez also ranks second-to-last in the NL in xFIP. Hernandez was slated to be tonight’s starter. Hernandez will be replaced by recently-recalled Sean O’Sullivan.

For posterity: “Hernandez looks to follow up gem in finale vs. Astros” in the revolving headlines

While right next to it: “Phillies deal Hernandez to Dodgers for two players to be named”

Ha! I think they must have pulled that one- it was there when I first posted it- but the part that says “Hernandez traded of two players to be named” is classic.

Hernandez (Carmona) traded for “players to be named later”- that’s humorous

I find that humorous, too. I just fear that the two players named will turn out to be the same player, just like Fausto and Roberto.

By the way, I hope your bum leg is recovering well.

With Hernandez gone for 2 players ” to be named later”, with Ruben still at the helm, I wonder what garbage we’re getting in return. This will be a “meh” for both us and the Dodgers.

According to reports, it’s two PTBNLs or “cash considerations”. For comparison, the PTBNL that Joe Blanton was traded for ended up being minor league pitcher Ryan O’Sullivan. Amaro loves trading with the Dodgers.

      What did you seriously expect?

I was thinking probably C or D level players. However the Phils minor league system blows overall. They just ousted some and probably more on the way.

Even the best GM wouldn’t get much for a rental #5 starter. But more manure can’t hurt when you’re running a “farm” system.

Speaking of manure, is O’Sullivan going to round out the rotation the rest of the year?

I will guess that Jason Marquis was not available to pitch tonight? Is he still with the Pigs??

I haven’t heard his name in a few weeks either, but would like to see Afam Loewen get a start. He was at Reading earlier in the year. Working his way back as a pitcher. You never know.

Marquis is on the DL, I believe.

Marquis pulled the old oblique strain drill to further delay his next bi league pitch. He’s been out since mid July, maybe a little later. Seems he had some clause in his contract for right around that time, too, that would have triggered free agency if he wasn’t called up, so I don’t know where he stands on that with the oblique out. But he was pitching pretty well at that level as I recall.

I’m very surprised Fausto-Roberto landed on the Dodgers. I knew the Dodgers were looking for a spare batting practice pitcher but I would have thought they’d choose a guy with more control. Maybe some of their hitters needed practice passing up fastballs out of the strike zone.

You could fill in a name carrying an assortment of fantasy visions of catching lightning in a bottle and apply this to the situation, but you have <4 weeks of 25 man rosters before growing to 40. So it's a short period of time that you use to see if you can catch it. You have a 3 game lead over the dreaded 1 game playoff, so the idea of tying up a 25 man roster spot with a guy who's been there, and did it for his last start (it's something, at least), and did some nice work in the pen here earlier in the season makes at least some sense. To get 2 players for that insurance sounds pretty good, but that's still open to the quality factor. But, at least they got out of a million dollar plus obligation that wouldn't figure to translate to much contribution.

My question is why was Fausto’s position in the rotation handed to Sean O’Sullivan when Maureen O’Sullivan’s ERA is probably under 6.35? And they wouldn’t have to pay her more than the MLB minimum for corpses… just like Ruben did with Mini-Mart.

Yeah, I know. A small sample size for Sean but is Ruben really that close to bringing back Wilson Valdez from the Dominican?

To say nothing about relative Gilbert O’Sullivan would be remiss. Oh well, Alone Again Naturally .

Not to mention Gilbert& Sullivan who nothing at all to do with this!

The Cubs claimed Cole Hamels off revocable waivers. If they offered Addison Russell & Kris Bryant I’d drive Cole to Chicago.

So Ruben Amourno can’t get anything done until after the usual deadline, and then the best he can give us is players to be named later? Dude, that’s no way to to stop people making fun of you.

I love how Mccarthy sells or tries to sell it.

Its like taking a crap on the floor and having people over to say how great it is and what a wonderful smell you have created.

O Sullivan has now given up 39 homers in 224 innings career wise.

I do love Jimmy. He’s one of my favorite players, maybe my favorite on the team. I thought it was funny how Sandberg and the media made so much out of it and blew it out of proportion when he said it.

Nothing funny about it. Jimmy Poppins and The Big Turd need to be coached on how to talk to the media. They say stupid things over and over again. That is why they are not fan favorites and get the criticism they deserve.
