Found this somewhat shocking – the Philadelphia Phillies did not offer now-Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas a contract before he signed with Arizona.
According to his agent, Jay Alou, via Philly.com, the Phillies never offered the Cuban a deal and he signed a $68.5 million deal to play in the desert.
I’m surprised because the Phillies were hoping to change the tenor of the team this offseason, and signing the best, young power bat on the market would have represented that. Yet, no offer was made. They clearly were worried about something, most likely his defense and conditioning concerns. And of course, the amount of money he was seeking. There have been some rumblings that Tomas is more of a DH than an OF. The Phillies already have a few of those players currently on the roster.
