Gameday 154: Phillies at Athletics

Philadelphia Phillies (70-83) at Oakland Athletics (83-69)

1929 Philadelphia Athletics Phillies

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: David Buchannan (6-7, 3.75 ERA)
vs.
OAK: Jon Lester (15-10, 2.45 ERA)

Time: 9:35 EST, O.co Coliseum
TV: CSN
Weather: Partly cloudy, 72
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A note for today: 60 years ago today, the A’s played their last home game in Philadelphia before moving to Kansas City and eventually Oakland.  The A’s were better than the Phillies for most of their stay in Philly and they’re certainly a better team this year.  Although they’ve been reeling as of late – dropping 8 of 10 at home and 6 of 8 overall - you can’t pin the blame on Jon Lester.  He’s gone 5-3 (despite paltry run support) with a 2.30 ERA since joining the club.  David Buchanan is searching for his first win in over a month, though he has posted a 2.70 ERA in his last seven outings.  He was in line for a win his last time out, but Jonathan Papelbon squashed those hopes.

Lineup: Reverce CF / Ruiz C / Utley 2B / Howard DH / Byrd RF / Brown LF / Ruf 1B / Franco 3B / Galvis SS / Buchanan P

Gameday 152: Phillies vs. Padres

Posted by Pat Gallen, Wed, September 17, 2014 08:00 PM Comments: 8

Philadelphia Phillies (69-82) at San Diego Padres (70-80)

Florida Marlins Phillies

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: Cole Hamels (8-7, 2.51 ERA)
vs.
SD: Eric Stults (7-16, 4.49)

Time: 10:10, Petco Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Clear, 77
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Note for tonight:  Last night was an ugly offensive showing for both teams. Tonight, Cole Hamels will look for just his ninth win despite the third-best ERA in the National League. Fun fact: the Phillies have a .666 OPS going into the game.

Lineup: Revere CF / Franco 3B / Utley 2B / Byrd RF / Ruf 1B / Brown LF / Ruiz C / Galvis SS / Hamels P

Gameday 147: Phillies vs. Marlins

Posted by Brian Michael, Fri, September 12, 2014 06:55 PM Comments: 25

Florida Marlins (71-74) at Philadelphia Phillies (67-78)

Florida Marlins Phillies

Starting Pitchers:
FLA: Henderson Alverez (10-6, 2.88 ERA)
vs.
PHI: Cole Hamels (8-7, 2.56 ERA)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Partly cloudy, 76 (another beautiful night for baseball)
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Note for tonight:  The Phillies return to divisional play for a 3-game series with the Marlins.  After last night’s anemic offensive performance, Ryne Sandberg is trotting out a more traditional lineup to face the Marlins ace.  So it looks like we may have a bit of a pitcher’s duel on our hands tonight – especially with Giancarlo Stanton out of the lineup after last night’s ugly HBP.

Lineup: Revere CF / Asche 3B / Utley 2B / Howard 1B / Byrd RF / Brown LF / Ruiz C /Galvis SS / Hamels P

Gameday 146: Phillies vs. Pirates

Posted by Brian Michael, Thu, September 11, 2014 06:40 PM Comments: 6

Pirates 1960 logo

Phillies

Pittsburgh Pirates (76-69) at Philadelphia Phillies (67-78)

Starting Pitchers:
PIT: Francisco Liriano (4-10, 3.74 ERA)
vs.
PHI: A.J. Burnett (8-15, 4.29 ERA)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Cloudy with rain possible, 80
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Note for tonight:  A.J. Burnett will be facing his former team tonight, and hopefully that provides some insight that will help his performance.  He is looking to avoid losing 16 games in a season for the first time in his career.  He has won 2 of his past 3 starts, but the Phils dropped the previous 7 games he started before that.  Also, Pirates’ left-fielder Starling Marte is on fire, batting .390 over a 10-game hit streak.  He went 2 for 4 last night, his fifth consecutive multi-hit game.  Finally, as you’ll see below, the Phillies are going with a new, youthful lineup as J-Roll is still nursing his hammy and Chase gets the night off.

Lineup: Revere CF / Franco 3B / Byrd RF / Howard 1B / Ruf LF / Ruiz C /Hernandez 2B / Galvis SS / Burnett P

Gameday 145: Phillies vs. Pirates

Phillies

Pittsburgh Pirates (75-69) at Philadelphia Phillies (67-77)

Starting Pitchers:
PIT: Vance Worley (6-4, 3.05 ERA)
vs.
PHI: Jerome Williams (3-0, 2.84 ERA)

Time: 7:05 , Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Mostly cloudy, 79
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Note for tonight:   Well, look who it is – our old friend Vance Worley!  The Vanimal returns to Citizens Bank Park for the first time since 2012 when he was traded to Minnesota for Ben Revere.  Although Vance hasn’t enjoyed the same success he saw in 2011 (11-3, 3.01 ERA), he’s been serviceable for the Pirates this season, sporting a 1.24 WHIP with a complete game shutout back on July 28th.

Lineup: Revere CF / Sizemore RF / Utley 2B / Howard 1B / Brown LF / Asche 3B / Nieves C /Galvis SS / Williams P

Gameday 143: Phillies vs. Pirates

Posted by Brian Michael, Mon, September 08, 2014 06:37 PM Comments: 25

Pirates 1960 logo

Phillies

Pittsburgh Pirates (74-68) at Philadelphia Phillies (66-76)

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: Kyle Kendrick (8-11, 4.77 ERA)
vs.
PIT: Jeff Locke (6-4, 3.75 ERA)

Time: 7:05 , Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Cloudy, 74
Media: Twitter and Facebook

Note for tonight:   The Phillies open a 4-game series tonight with their cross-state rivals as the Pirates will look to extend their lead for the second Wild Card spot.  Fortunately for the Phillies, the Buccos will be without Josh Harrison and Pedro Alvarez in the lineup as they are nursing ankle and foot injuries respectfully.  Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke is coming off one of his worst starts of the season; however, he is 3-0 versus the Phillies with a 1.37 ERA and .176 batting average against.  Meanwhile, Kyle Kendrick is coming off an excellent start last week against the Braves and is 5-1 in his last 6 appearances.

Lineup: Revere CF / Rollins SS / Utley 2B / Howard 1B / Byrd RF / Ruf LF / Ruiz C / Franco 3B / Kendrick P
