Philadelphia Phillies (32-38) at St. Louis Cardinals (39-33)

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: David Buchanan (2-3, 5.97)

Time:  8:15 at Busch Stadium
TV: CSN
Weather: Chance of Rain, 87

A Note for Tonight: The Phillies are coming off a sweep of the Atlanta Braves, and now head to St. Louis to face another tough team in the Cardinals.  Anytime the Phillies head to St. Louis, all eyes are on Ryan Howard.  Howard is hitting .368 with 9 homers and 35 RBI in 26 games at his hometown stadium.

The Phillies will send David Buchanan to the mound, who really has yet to put together a solid Major League start. He’s done the job at times, but it would be nice to see him put up a decent line of a quality start or better.

Season High 18 Hits Propels Phillies to Sweep in Atlanta

Posted by Pat Gallen, Wed, June 18, 2014 04:10 PM Comments: 12

Veteran righty Aaron Harang was roughed up by the Phillies, allowing nine runs over five innings, as the Phillies won 10-5 over the Braves. It’s their first sweep in Atlanta since 2011.

-The Phillies offense was the story in this one, possibly for the first time since they opened the season in Texas. How about 18 hits and 10 runs? Marlon Byrd hit a homer and the Phillies posted five doubles on the day, trashing Aaron Harang.

-Roberto Hernandez stuck it through six innings, although he probably should have been pulled before that. He got lucky on a handful of double-plays and was generally average, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out two.

-Ken Giles pitched the 8th and 9th innings and looked great doing it. He struck out three, allowing one hit and one walk, needing 38 pitches to finish the frames. The slider looked nasty at times and his fastball, while not registering 100, was humming. Antonio Bastardo also pitched well, striking out two in his inning of work. Mama, who is that man? This bullpen has been solid lately.

-It was the Phillies first road sweep of any kind since April 2013. Are you now believing? This division is a winnable disaster, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. But I can’t help but think the longer they keep it closer in the race, the longer the wait will be for some sort of move to the future. You’re looking at maybe being a buyer and not a seller next month.

-Wil Nieves went 3-for-6 with two doubles, but was hurt late in the game, pulling up lame as he ran to second base. Carlos Ruiz relieved him for the final frame. Look for Koyie Hill to join the club as the travel to St. Louis.

Starting Pitchers:

vs.
PHI: AJ Burnett (4-5, 4.24)

Time: 1:05, Citizens Bank Park

Jimmy Rollins is now the all-time hit king for the Phillies. So now what? Well, now they try and win back to back series with a win over the Cubs. They can do so if AJ Burnett can pitch much the same way he did against the Padres earlier in the week.

A Note for Tonight: The Phillies are coming off a frustrating 2-1 loss against the  Cubs.  They’ll send rookie David Buchanan to the mound to rebound from last night’s loss.  Buchanan had one bad inning in his last outing that cost him the loss.  After his Major League debut, Buchanan has had his struggles, posting a 6.75 ERA in his last 18 2/3 innings.

Jimmy Rollins is one hit away from passing Mike Schmidt as the Phillies’ all-time leader in hits.

Lineup: Revere CF/ Rollins SS/ Utley 2B/ Howard 1B/ Byrd RF/ Brown LF/ Ruiz/ Brignac 3B/ Buchanan P

Gameday 65: Cubs vs. Phillies

phillies

other

Chicago Cubs (26-38) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-36)

Starting Pitchers:
CHI: Jake Arrieta (1-1, 2.50)
vs.
PHI: Roberto Hernandez (2-4, 4.35)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Chance of Thunderstorms, 73
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A Note for Tonight: The Phillies just swept a team with a poor record, and now they face another team who sits in the cellar of their division. The Cubs are the only team in the National League with less wins than the Phillies. A win tonight would give the Phillies a season-high four-game winning streak. Another sweep would be important for Philadelphia, as they need to prove they are better than a last-place caliber team.

Also, Jimmy Rollins is two hits away from passing Mike Schmidt as the Phillies’ all-time leader in hits.

Lineup: Gwynn CF, Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Byrd RF, Brown LF, Ruiz C, Brignac 3B, Kendrick P

Gameday 64: Padres vs. Phillies

other

San Diego Padres (28-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (27-36)

Starting Pitchers:
SD: Eric Stults (2-7, 5.68)
vs.
PHI: Kyle Kendrick (1-6, 4.30)

Time: 1:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Chance of Rain, 77
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A Note for Tonight:

How much will it rain? That is the question as the Phillies go for a sweep of the Padres in an afternoon tilt. Kyle Kendrick, looking at you, dude. Kendrick needs to shut it down early and often and the Phillies could have their first 3-game winning streak since 1987. Kidding. Kinda.

Lineup: Revere CF / Rollins SS / Utley 2B / Byrd RF / Mayberry 1B / Brown LF / Nieves C / Hernandez 3B / Kendrick P
