Posted by Brian Michael, Thu, May 16, 2013 10:56 AM Comments: 0

Phillies Phestival Today the Phillies will hold their Phillies Phestival benefiting the ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter. Since 1984, the Phillies have raised over $12 million to combat the progressive neuromuscular disorder, known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. Most of the money has been raised through this annual event which features your favorite Phillies in autograph and photo booths, games for kids, memorabilia auctions and lots of yummy food.

To thank fans who support this worthy cause, Phillies Nation will be sponsoring the event through an ad in the event program. The ad will offer a special prize to attendees who visit the secret URL displayed. It’s just a small token of thanks to those Phillies fans who like to get involved with helping others.

A Story That Shows the Good Side of Philly Sports Fans and Twitter

How #Give4Mark helped to raise money for the family of a lifelong Phillies fan who died this month.

Originally published in The Philly Post by Stephen Silver on January 30, 2013

In the same week that the Manti Te’o “fake girlfriend” scandal captivated and horrified the nation, another story emerged that touched on sports, Twitter and a prominent death. The difference is this one, rather than demonstrate all the worst things about the Internet, social media and humanity in general, showcased some of the best.

Also, @MarkM625 really lived and really died.

When Mark Marinelli of Bethlehem, a lifelong Phillies fan who used that handle, passed away suddenly on January 18th, Marinelli’s many acquaintances in the Phillies fan community on Twitter gathered online to share their memories of their late friend. Soon after, the blog Phillies Nation launched a charity driveusing the hashtag #Give4Mark, meant to assist Marinelli’s family with his funeral and other expenses.

By the time the campaign, run through Phillies Nation’s Paypal account, closed on Tuesday, it had raised more than $7,500, well over the initial goal, in just 10 days. The #Give4Mark hashtag was mentioned on Twitter more than 1,000 times. Continue reading A Story That Shows the Good Side of Philly Sports Fans and Twitter

LoMo Remembers and #Gives4Mark

Posted by Ian Riccaboni, Sun, January 20, 2013 03:00 PM Comments: 2

On Friday, we learned of the passing of Mark Marinelli, who had touched many lives within the Phillie fan and writer community with his sense of humor and his positive outlook. One of those lives he touched was Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison.

Mark and Logan connected on Twitter after Morrison was called up to the Major Leagues for the first time in the Summer of 2010. Their relationship went from friendly banter, Mark bugging Logan about a sprained tendon that required crutches – Logan implying that they could have a wheelchair race, to support, Mark offering his best words of wisdom to Logan after learning of Morrison’s father passing of lung cancer, the same illness that struck down Mark’s mother when Mark was 25.

After learning of Mark’s passing via Twitter, Morrison took to Twitter to share his memories of Mark with the world. With his permission, we are proudly sharing those Tweets. And, with his permission, we are proud to announce that he is among the many who have already given a generous contribution to #Give4Mark – the Phillies Nation collection where 100% of the monies collected are donated directly to the Marinelli family. As you read Morrison’s memories, please consider making your own donation to the Marinelli family if you have not already. Thank you.

PN and FS09 Encourage You to #Give4Mark

Posted by Ian Riccaboni, Sat, January 19, 2013 09:28 AM Comments: 6

With a heavy heart, I am sad to report that Phillies Nation and the Phillies fan and beat writer community has lost one of its most beloved commentators, friends, and Twitter pals Mark Marinelli (Twitter: @mark625) yesterday. Mark and I often bonded over our Allentownian heritage and our love for the Phillies over Twitter, but unfortunately, I never was able to meet Mark outside of the internet.

Two rather famous folks did, however, and thought Mark was just as great of a guy.

One of those was Marlins outfielder Logan Morrison. Mark engaged Morrison in banter, including some friendly jabs – the two developed a relationship that led Morrison inviting Mark to Citizen’s Bank Park as his guest. The other is “my mans”, who was recently featured in Slate, FanSince09. Mark was one of the few folks to know the identity of Mr. (or Ms./Mrs.) 09 and the two were great friends. Mark’s loss hit FS09 harder than most and he/she, along with Phillies Nation, are here to encourage you to #Give4Mark to Phillies Nation’s PayPal account. 100% of the proceeds go directly to the Marinelli family to help with the cost of and costs associated with the proper services. We get a lot of hits at PN – if everyone gives one dollar, the Marinelli family can celebrate Mark’s life stress free.

Without any further interruption, here are some words from one of Mark’s good friends, FanSince09:

My mans past smh!

On the morning of January 18, 2012,  the Phillies twitter community was informed about the death of Mark Marinelli, aka @Mark625. Mark was a beloved and valued member of our community,  a loyal fan who was quick to share his wealth of knowledge about the game as well as his biting sense of humor.

At age four, Mark was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and would spend the rest of his life confined to a wheelchair.  Doctors believed that Mark wouldn’t live to see 18, but typical to his character, Mark blew past that expectation by 20 years. Despite his difficulties,  Mark was always positive.   As Ryan Petzar (@petzrawr) puts it:

“I never once heard Mark complain about his station in life, I wish the same could be said about me. He was a tough son of a bitch, but he was one of the good ones. I don’t think he knew how many lives he touched, but then again maybe none of us do, at least until it’s too late.”

He never expected sympathy or help,  he was the first one to make a joke at his own expense.   While he was quick to share stories of his crazy ex girlfriend, he didn’t dwell on the past, and always seemed positive about the future.   In the last few years, Mark entered the local spotlight when he struck up a friendship with the Marlins Logan Morrison.   Their bromance will always be remembered as one of the most entertaining stories on Twitter.

I always enjoyed my interactions with Mark.  Often times he would show his devilish side in DMs,  nudging me to stir the pot or alerting me to something funny that I missed.   I’ll miss interacting with him, our community has lost a very special person.

More than anything, Mark was one of us.   The online Phillies community is like no other fanbase in the world; as much as we argue and disagree, at the end of the day we have a common bond that connects us, we’re family, and family helps each other.

PhilliesNation has generously agreed to host and maintain this donation page for Mark.   All funds will go to the Marinelli family to help with funeral costs and any other expenses.

I strongly encourage you to give what you can.  This is not only a chance to help Mark’s family, but a chance to show the world what our community is capable of.

In addition, please leave your memories about Mark in the comment section so that this page can act as a memorial.

Phillies Quizzo Answer Sheet A BIG hat tip goes out to everyone who attended Phillies Quizzo on Wednesday night. We had 20 teams battle it out for a host of Phillies prizes including a raffle featuring a framed and autographed Roy Halladay “Pride of the Phillies” poster.

Through everyone’s generosity, we were able to raise enough money for Philabundance to provide 1,150 meals for families in the Delaware Valley.

A special thanks to Holy Family University Athletics for sponsoring, Scoats and The Grey Lodge for hosting, Erin for quizzing and the winning team for donating their prize money.

Details for our next charity event, Wiffadelphia on March 9th, are coming soon. In the meantime you can catch Pat hosting Sports Quizzo this Sunday at 6:30 in Center City.
