It’s amazing that the Phillies have made it this far, just a game and a half back of the Yankees for the best record in all of baseball and hotter than any other contender when it counts the most. Tonight is a chance to go up by 2/3 the number of games remaining in the season. Monday and Tuesday nights, the Phillies sent their two best pitchers out to beat up on children. One wonders if Bobby Cox will ride off into the sunset regretting his failure to set his rotation for the three most important games of the season.

But today, Tommy Hanson takes up Atlanta’s cause. Hanson was spectacular as a rookie last year and has built on that strong performance in 2010, posting 3.8 WAR, a 3.14 K/BB ratio, and a 3.39 FIP. However, he’s going against Roy Oswalt, who, since joining the Phillies has been so good it’s starting to get boring to talk about it.

After winning the first two games of the series, this one is not absolutely essential, but it would certainly make a difference to go into the last nine games up six, rather than four.

Today’s lineup: Victorino CF, Polanco 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Werth RF, Ibanez LF, Ruiz C, Valdez SS, Oswalt P

Your gameday beer: Butterbeer

<img

Butterbeer is one of the few Harry Potter creations that we Muggles can enjoy. It’s one part butterscotch schnapps and seven parts cream soda. Burnett.

Lee has been absolutely spectacular throughout the playoffs; he’s been everything the Phillies hoped for and more. He needs to be every bit as perfect tonight as he has been through the first four starts this postseason. His complete-game six-hitter in Game 1 seems like ages ago, but it’s something to start with. If Lee can shut New York down and go deep into this game, the Phillies could be looking at a Game 6 in the Bronx.

The man to try and finish out this World Series on enemy soil is A.J. Burnett. We saw what he is capable of in Game 2 of the World Series (7 inn, 1 ER, 9 K) but we know he can be wild and at times will fall apart as he did in the Angels series. Phillies fans need to be as loud as humanly possible and knock this guy off his perch.

Offensively, the front four need to do a little bit of damage. Jimmy Rollins has been absent, rarely able to hit anything hard, and Shane Victorino is struggling as well. Chase Utley has been the most consistent of the bunch, and the Phillies need more of the same from him. Ryan Howard is the most heartbreaking of all. He is just 3-for-17 in the series with 10 brutal punchouts. If he has something left in the tank, now would be the time to burn it.

Interesting stat: A.J. Burnett threw 84.6 percent of his first pitches for strikes in Game 2. Over the course of the regular season, he tossed just 54 percent of first pitch strikes. Was Game 2 a fluke? It’s very possible.

Don’t stop being a fan, don’t stop the love you have for this team, and for at least one more night, don’t stop believin’. Three wins in a row is absolutely possible.

High hopes, everyone…

I’ve purposely stayed away from Barleywines, but tonight with the Phillies’ backs against the wall, it’s time to bring out the big guns. At 9% ABV, Bigfoot is a relatively tame foray into the category but certainly stronger than most traditional beers. Sierra Nevada boasts its “dense, fruity bouquet, an intense flavor palate and a deep reddish-brown color.” The strong malt flavor is balanced by bittersweet hops making for an interesting Ale. This type of brew goes well with desserts like all those cheesecakes Sen. Spector has coming his way. – By Brian

I’m surprised we didn’t recommended this beer during our summer of Amber Ales, but it is appropriate tonight as the Phillies need to hop back on the winning train. As advertised, this brew is loaded with citrusy hops, which accompany a pine, grass-like scent. The mouthfeel is smooth, thick and dry but full of flavor sensations. If you like the flavors of Pale Ales but not the bitterness, then this beer is worth a go. Have it with some grilled salmon seasoned with lemon. – By Brian

<span

Dodgers last night at CBP, firing an eight-inning gem to put the Phils up 2-1 in the NLCS. His performance was one of the finest in Phillies history.

Joe Blanton doesn’t have to repeat last night’s outing, but no one would mind if he did. Although he has not started a game since October 2 against Florida, Blanton has toed the rubber twice during the playoffs, with both appearances coming against Colorado in relief. Last postseason against the Dodgers, Blanton was decent, giving up three earned runs over five innings in the Game 4 victory. A repeat performance of that would be just fine tonight. And if Blanton comes up big, the Phillies will be in control of this series.

Standing in the way of that is an old Philly favorite. Randy Wolf will face off against the Phils for the fourth time in his career, but the first in the playoffs as a member of the Dodgers. Wolf is 1-1 against his former club in 2009, with two very different games. On May 13 in Philadelphia, Wolf was brilliant, striking out eight over six-innings, allowing just one earned run. On June 7, the Phils traveled to L.A. and knocked him around for six earned over 6 1/3. Which Wolfie will we see tonight? Hopefully the latter.

Amazingly, Pedro Feliz has owned Randy Wolf in his career. Feliz is 5-for-17 against Wolf with three homers. However, on the flip side, Ryan Howard has been awful against the junkball-throwing lefty. The Big Piece is just 1-for-9 with four punchouts in his career.

Blanton has been good against Matt Kemp (2-for-11) and Casey Blake (1-for-21) during his career, but awful against Manny Ramirez (14-for 25, HR, 8 RBI) and James Loney (5-for-8).

A commanding 3-games-to-1 lead is on the line tonight in South Philly, and it’s up to Joe Blanton to keep the ball rolling.

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Blanton (P).

<img

It’s going to be a good series, guys. This series by no means is over. It’s going to be a tough series,” Charlie Manuel said.

Break out the rally towels. Home-field advantage starts now.

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Lee (P).

<img

After that, he normally calms down, as he has proven with his four runs allowed from the fourth to the sixth innings of his starts.

Vicente Padilla is a surprising start in Game 2 for the Dodgers. The guess here is that Joe Torre did not want Padilla pitching in Philly on a cold night with hostile fans berating him. Smart move. Padilla has been nothing short of brilliant since being picked up, going 4-0 through seven starts. However, he struggles mightily in the middle innings, something the Phillies offense will surely pick up on. The Phillies have scored 18 runs between the fourth and sixth innings in five playoff games in ’09. Look for the trend to continue, although a few early on couldn’t hurt either.

The Good: Brad Lidge coming in and nailing it down for yet another save. Is he back to his old ways? Also, Ryan Howard now has 8 RBI in five games this postseason. Look out, Reggie Jackson.

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Hamels (P).

<img

The 20% ABV make this more like jungle juice than beer, but it should give you a nice dayload as the Phils look to take Game 2. Enjoy with some charred burgers and beans, but prepare for a rough Saturday morning. /> the hill tonight for the Phillies. His last game was certainly not his best postseason performance. In an abbreviated start against the Rockies last week, he allowed four runs on four hits in five innings. On the other hand, he was lights out against the Dodgers during the regular season with a complete game shutout at Chavez Ravine. Dodger hitters are .228/.261/. 368 lifetime with 31 hits and 29 strikeouts in 136 combined at bats.

The matchup on paper favors Cole; after that though, the bullpen numbers are not as favorable – particularly for Scott Eyre and more recently Brad Lidge. One could surmise that the longer Cole pitches, the better chance the Phillies have.

On the flip side, we have Clayton Kershaw – another young gun. Don’t let his 8-8 record (0-2 against the Phils) this season fool you, his 2.79 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 7 homers in 171 games are the numbers to focus on tonight. This lefty is stingy with his fastball and nasty curve. He has a tendency to work the outside corner against lefties at the plate. We know this guy has good stuff but the question remains – can the 21-year old handle the pressure of the postseason and the Phillies lineup?

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Hamels (P).

<img

The frigid temps seemed to play a small role in J.A. Happ’s sub-par outing, although some will say he was squeezed by home plate umpire Jerry Meals.

Game 4 will have Cliff Lee take the hill against Ubaldo Jimenez, in a mirror image of Game 1. Lee was outstanding, going the distance in that opening win, while allowing just a lone run in the 9th inning. The Phillies will need a similar performance in tonight’s game as the bullpen is somewhat depleted. Charlie Manuel had to use five relievers, including Joe Blanton again, after Happ lasted just three innings. Scott Eyre suffered a leg injury while fielding a grounder and is uncertain for this evening. So all eyes are once again on Lee to bring forth a spectacular outing.

Ubaldo Jimenez was pesky through four innings in Game 1, but ran out of gas in the fifth inning. In that 5-1 victory, every Phillie had a hit, including Lee, and Jimenez was bounced in the sixth after allowing five runs. The Phillies now know the opponent well, and with the bats starting to heat up once again, let’s hope we’re in for some fireworks in this possible closeout game.

Chase Utley finally gave the Phillies some pop, going 3-for-4 with a home run yesterday, er, early this morning). However, Jimmy Rollins is basically MIA at the top of the order. He did have a big ninth inning hit, but has looked lost for the most part at the dish. Look for a J-Roll turnaround.

Tonight’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (RF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Lee (P).

<img

Today, look for the bats to stay hot, as Cook has struggled mightily against the Phils. He held the Rox to just one run over seven innings while fanning nine. The Fightin’s fans will surely take a similar effort today.

Jimenez pitched 6 1/3 innings back in ’07 against the Phils and struck out five while giving up just one run. The silver lining there is he walked four batters, and he’s been known to do that a lot. With some patience, the Phillies can get to Jimenez early and often.

Couple that with the winds today, and we could have an exciting offensive match up. The wind is blowing from left field out to right, giving the slew of lefty bats for the Phillies some leverage. Let’s hope the jet stream grabs an Utley fly ball, helping him to get moving here in the early goings of the playoffs.

Be prepared Phillies fans…this is October.

Today’s Lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Werth (LF), Ibanez (LF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz (C), Lee (P).
Oktoberfests aren’t the only beers appropriate for the month of October – you’d be surprised how you can make a beer that tastes like pumpkin but isn’t gross. The Brooklyn Brewery secret for this beer is to mask most of the pumpkin flavor with spices such as cinnamon, brown sugar, clove and nutmeg. Though not the best pumpkin beer out there, it is definitely one worth trying on this crisp afternoon of playoff baseball. Have it with some roast turkey, like in one of those Gobbler sandwiches from WaWa. – By Brian

<span

This one is intended for a mass audience so it’s not as strong a Wheat as Pyramid’s, Leinenkugels or even Blue Moon. I would say it’s like Bud Light with a little more flavor – the packaging says coriander and citrus peels but it’s hard to pinpoint them among all the bubbles. After back-to-back appearances without allowing an earned run, Big Joe gave up five earned against Milwaukee last weekend, but still came away with the win. Against the Marlins, Blanton is 4-1 with a 2.63 ERA in five career starts. If he can continue the torrid trend against the Fish, home field for the duration of the NL Playoffs could be in their sights. Keep an eye on the Rockies and Dodgers match up as well.

Rick Vandenhurk sees the Phillies once again. His last start was against Philly on September 23, when he gave up four earned over six innings of work in the Marlins 7-6 victory. href="http://twitter.com/philliesnation" target="_blank">Phillies Nation

Whew! After a September scare, the Phillies and their fans can both exhale; and hopefully enjoy these next four games. That said, there is still a lot to play for, like home-field advantage and a roster spot for some guys.

For Cliff Lee tonight will be a chance to fine tune for the playoffs and end the season on a high note. He has been inconsistent after an electric start since coming to the Phillies. In his last outing, he coughed up seven runs in six innings against the Brewers. After tallying that start, his 226 innings this season led all major league pitchers. Maybe Charlie Manuel will encore last night’s dramatic pitching change with Brad Lidge by pulling Lee earlier than usual.

The Astros meantime counter with 2-11 Felipe Paulino who has been the victim of poor run support (among other things) all season long. Paulino has a 8.37 ERA on the road and 8.42 at night which means another sellout crowd in brisk conditions might spell trouble for the 25-year old righty. He is mainly a fastball, curve, slider pitcher and has given up 120 hits in 92.2 innings this season.

As for the lineup, look for a usual starter or two to take a seat on the bench for the majority of tonight’s game. Charlie Manuel said he knows some of his players could use a rest. “I think I can do it. It’s not like I’m going to take three or four out of the lineup at the same time.” In the past five season, he has led the Phillies to an NL-best 217-143 record in the second half of the season – so he might know what he’s doing.

<img

A win tonight, and the Phillies will clinch their third straight NL East crown, and in the process give their players some much needed rest.

Pedro Martinez is the man that will lead them tonight. He has not pitched since September 19 because of a stiff neck, but the kinks are out and he’s ready to throw. Martinez suffered his only loss of the season in that outing against Atlanta, going three innings, while allowing three runs before he was lifted with the neck strain. Before that, he had been spectacular, winning five of his previous seven outings.

He hasn’t faced the Astros since August 2008, and overall his numbers aren’t pretty. Pedro is 6-7 with a 4.03 ERA lifetime in 16 starts against Houston. But tonight, throw the numbers away, because Pedro is known to do big things in big spots.

Brian Moehler opposes Pedro tonight. The Phillies have hit him hard, as his 6.19 ERA indicates. He’s started eight times against the Phils, giving up 60 hits and 33 earned runs. This give the Fightin’s a surefire opportunity to clinch tonight.

The champagne is chilling, the plastic tarps are ready, now there’s only one thing left to do. Win.

NOTES: Carlos Ruiz is back in the lineup and Brett Myers is available out of the bullpen if needed.

Tonight’s lineup: Rollins (SS), Victorino (CF), Utley (2B), Howard (1B), Ibanez (LF), Werth (RF), Feliz (3B), Ruiz. /> Beck’s, a classic German Brewery, provides tonight’s beer like a present wrapped neatly in tin foil. It’s certainly not the best German beer but it is popular and widely available. Like similar mass-produced pilsners it has that traditional rice and corn beer taste, though not has strong as a Bud or Miller product. It of course goes well with Wiener Schnitzel otherwise known as veal cutlets. – By Brian<br
