Is Tonight’s Phillies Game Cancelled?

Hopefully this will help you determine if tonight’s Phillies game will be rained out, delayed, postponed, or played. The most favorable weather conditions for the Phillies are day games with temperatures between 74 and 83 and winds cross-field right to left.

The right to postpone the playing of a game is controlled by the home club with the exception of the final series (that begins on or after June 1) between two clubs, at which time the responsibility shifts to the Umpire-in-Chief. Once a game has started, the Umpire-in-Chief determines if a game should be suspended, when it can be resumed or if it should be terminated because of bad weather or unfit playing conditions. The Official Playing Rules provide that when a game has been temporarily suspended, umpires must wait at least 30 minutes before calling the game.

“Game Called Because of Rain” by Norman Rockwell appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post published April 23, 1949. The depiction is also known as The Three Umpires, Tough Call and Bottom of the Sixth.

The original is part of the collection of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The teams involved are the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Pittsburg Pirates.
