Is there anyone out there who thinks it would be a bad idea to try and sign Cole Hamels to an extension this year. What would it cost? Some one threw out there the other day 4 years 75 million, would he sign that deal? He would still be young enough to sign another deal after that and it would lock him and Cliff up for the same time period. Just throwing it out there, I like that idea a lot. It could even be back loaded to where he is getting 20-22 million in the last two years, basiclpaying him

The trend is for longer contracts right now, especially guys Cole’s age. I would think the $ per year are in line, but it’s probably going to have to be longer- 5 maybe 6. The Yankees would probably give him 8 just to get back at us.

I guess the next question then Lefty is would Cole sign to stay in Philly like Cliff or is he going to go for the money. I am an eternal optimist, so I feel like he would want to stay here. But I do not like going over 4 years guaranteed for a pitcher, maybe 5 with 6th year option for a guy at Coles age,

even at 27 as of Dec, you give him 5 years guaranteed he could sign another 3-4 year deal worth the same amount of money if he stays healthy and pitches like he did last year

Betasig- Watch the Rox- they did it again today! this time with Cargo 7 years. I get that Cole’s a pitcher and that makes a difference, but these guys want security now. Sort of have to look at it from their POV. (even though we’ll probably never make in our lives what they make a year!) Just for arguments sake, say for instance Cole signs a four year deal and (god forbid) has to undergo TJ surgery or something else major, then he won’t get big offers when he’s 31. And because of the Rox, Yanks, and even us to an extent, the 3 and 4 year deals are becoming less and less commonplace.

He might agree to a 5 with an option for 6- set it up like the Lee deal with an innings count he has to meet in year 5.

I think you have to go AT LEAST 5 yrs guaranteed fot a guy like Cole and the fact that he’s only 27. His best years are IN FRONT of him.

Unrelated to Cole, but now that Beltre is in Texas, Vlad is no longer of interest to the Rangers and the Angels aren’t interested either. Maybe the Phils could pick him up “cheap” as that righty bat. His defense sucks though so that’s the downside.

Chuck- Good to see you here! We need to start making more use of this place-spread the word. I’m not for bringing in Vlad. But I have been impressed with him during his career, and certainly would root for him if that’s the direction they go. He is a defensive liability at this stage of his career. I just think he needs to be an everyday DH.

Lefty, I’m a creature of habit. Commenting on the main posts is what I’m used to. This site is cool, but I still think I’m back with the old site sometimes. It will all take some time to adjust and I’m open to the forums. I’m not from the DC area as I’m a Philly guy, but I don’t think that matters.

Hey Manny! I really believe Cole could be special this year.

Cole has a chance to learn from the masters and become a true ACE. If RAJ wants to continue to be a GM that amazes the baseball world, I would believe Cole gets a 5 to 6 year deal that would in essence make him a Phillie for life. I think if it’s attractive enough, I think Cole takes it.

I hope so as a Met fan I want to face him as many times a year as possible.
Chris Young wants to face him also … Because he can swing a bat so well that he can single handedly knock Cole Hamels out of the Mets’ opener against the Phillies on Tuesday. Two hits against the Phillies in the third inning for Young, with a whole bunch of other hits in between (including one of David Wright’s four) and Cole Hamels was lifted after two and a third after having gave up six runs. In fact, he couldn’t wait for that inning to end. And lucky for him he didn’t have to. He was gone before it could end so he could get his beauty rest on his memory foam pillow and wake up refreshed enough to plan his next radio interview where he calls the Mets choke artists and lecture us on how other baseball players should act.
