Notes for tonight: After starting the season with just two ER over his first 11.2 innings-pitched, Jeremy Hellickson has endured back-to-back rough outings to raise his season ERA slightly over five. Back on April 5, the right hander surrendered six runs (five ER) against the Nationals in an outing that lasted just three innings. Hellickson will look to get off to a better start against the Nats’ dangerous offense tonight in D.C..
For the Nationals, left hander Gio Gonzalez will look to build off of his April 5 start against the Phillies where he struck out eight and allowed just two ER over six innings. During his career, Gonzalez sports an 8-5 record against the Phils with a 2.91 ERA and 106 strikeouts over 105.1 innings-pitched. The 30-year-old has allowed three ER or less in his last five starts against the Phillies.
Fun Facts: At 10-10, the Phillies will look to go over the .500 mark for the first time since April 11 of 2015, where they beat the Nationals in 10 innings to improve to 3-2.
With two walks last night, Odubel Herrera’s 19 BBs rank third in baseball while his .442 OBP sits fifth.
It’s still early, but the Philies have handed the Nationals two of their five losses this season. It’s the little things.
