That’s a good point Lefty, I could never root for a team with a terrible TV crew

I’m really not up in arms about the Schneider thing, aside from some idle bitching I did on Twitter, mostly for the reasons Mike articulated above. I just want to say, though, that a team’s win percentage when player is in the game is totally meaningless, in every instance.

Yes, he had a pretty good late 2010 (.810 OPS from August to October), but pitching is what really carried the Phillies into the postseason. It’s not like they were a bad team to begin with. Still doesn’t change the final assessment. Let’s remember that this started by someone saying he wasn’t worse than Burrell, [...]

I’m not basing it on the metrics, I’m basing it on my own two godd**n eyes, and it’s really absurd the way people want to whitewash Raul’s defense because he’s a nice guy. His defense was really bad, there is no gray area. And I don’t particularly care how good he was when he was [...]

Pat Burrell had an eight year career with the Phillies in which he hit .257/.367/.485 (119 OPS+) and played really bad defense. Raul Ibanez had a 3 year career in which he hit .264/.329/.469 (111 OPS+) and played really bad defense. Burrell had a great career here. Ibanez effectively had one good half-season.

That would be a pretty dumb strategy since you’d be excluding yourself from the entire IFA market. Where do you think Carlos Ruiz came from?

It means that, since he is now defected, he can be signed as an international free agent right now, by any MLB club willing to bid the highest. I imagine there is going to be a period of further scouting, but if he can be had for less than the moon and stars he’s probably [...]

The solution to this is to just ignore pitcher win totals. They’re not worth caring about.

I can’t see how this would possibly ever be seen as a bargain, even considering the market for the foreseeable future. Even if 3 or 4 first baseman end up making more than Howard, there are probably 8 or 9 first basemen that will be more valuable than him going forward.

So Publius…it’s about the weather and luck? Once those things change, they’ll be putting 6-8 runs on the board every game? Dude, come on. That is pretty ridiculous.
That would be ridiculous, except it’s just not even close to what he said.

On a team where OBP is a problem, bunting won’t do anything for you. Bunting just creates more outs, which is the opposite of getting on base. I don’t think Rollins is going to be bunting for base hits very often.

That’s right, Pat. Washington’s pick was protected.

Martinez is 28, he’s not young. He can’t hit either, he’s just bad. Most of these Rule 5 guys are Rule 5 eligible for a reason: they’ve hung around as organizational filler and didn’t even merit a spot on the 40 man roster.

Utley’s BABIP will not stay at .179, although it would be fair to note that his line drive rate is in the toilet right now at 10%. I doubt that will stay low either though. He’s only had 39 PA coming off of an injury. Just give him some time.

I don’t give a shit about his next save chance. Madson has proven, time and time again, that he is the best reliever on this team, and it’s not close. So let’s give him the most important situations that come up in the late innings of games, instead of worrying about arbitrary criteria like save/non-save [...]
