Happ, Savery among first batch of cuts

The Phillies trimmed their Spring Training roster this morning, making 14 cuts.

Players optioned to Minor League camp:

  • James Happ, SP
  • Scott Mathieson, RP
  • Joe Bisenius, RP
  • Brad Harman, SS/2B

These players can be re-called to the Phillies numerous times this season. With today’s moves, Mathieson has no more options, Happ and Bisenius have one and Harman has two.

Players reassigned to Minor League camp:

  • Ron Chiavacci, SP
  • Zach Segovia, SP
  • Brian Mazone, SP
  • Joe Savery, SP
  • Tuffy Gosewich, C
  • Lou Marson, C
  • Jason Donald, 2B
  • Mike Cervenak, 3B
  • Andy Tracy, 1B
  • Valentino Pascucci, RF

These players won’t make the 40-man roster and, thus, aren’t eligible for options.

None of these moves are completely surprising, though Bisenius was doing well this spring and could’ve stayed up a little longer. Matheison, still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, should be returning soon. He’ll likely start 2008 in Reading or Allentown before being on the short list of first call-ups. Happ, who hadn’t done too bad a job, will begin in AAA and will hope to be with the club by mid-season. Among the recalls, Savery showed some stuff over the spring, but got hit around well. Pascucci was a nice story, and will likely take right field for AAA Lehigh Valley.

With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well.
