While this has nothing to do with the Phillies (and could show my obvious obsession with the Mets), this was an interesting little thing passed into my hands today that I had to post — Mets, Yankees and Red Sox players now have featured wines to benefit charity.
From a Charity Hop press release about the New York teams:
Putting their cross-town rivalry aside in the name of philanthropy, a quintet of local heroes has teamed up with Charity Wines to raise some big league dollars for a host of worthy causes. Jorge Posada & Bobby Abreu join stars Jose Reyes, Johan Santana, and Brian Schneider to round out the New York series. The group becomes part of a growing number of athletes nationally to launch their own wine labels. The players do not benefit financially from this initiative. 100% of their proceeds go directly to the charity of their choice!
The all star lineup looks like this:
- Jorge Posada: Jorge Cabernet – benefiting The Jorge Posada Foundation
- Bobby Abreu: Abreu’s Finest – benefiting the Police Athletic League (PAL)
- Jose Reyes: CaberReyes – benefiting Major League Baseball Players Trust
- Johan Santana: Santana’s Select – benefiting The Johan Santana Foundation
- Brian Schneider: Schneider Schardonnay – benefiting The Catching for Kids Foundation
And the Red Sox wines are:
- David Ortiz: Vintage Papi – benefiting The David Ortiz Children’s Fund
- Jason Varitek: Captain’s Cabernet – benefiting Pitching in For Kids
- Kevin Youkilis: SauvignYoouuk Blanc – benefiting Hits for Kids
- Curt Schilling: Schilling Schardonnay – benefiting Curt’s Pitch for ALS
- Tim Wakefield: CaberKnuckle – benefiting Pitching in for Kids
The wines will be $13 and will be available in proximity to each team. (Mets and Yankees wines will be available in New Jersey.) Obvious jokes include: “Drinking Abreu’s Finest will make you shield away from dangerous routine fly balls” and “Don’t drink CaberReyes in September, you’ll likely choke.” On a positive note, it’s good seeing the Police Athletic League and Curt’s Pitch for ALS get more help. And you have to admit, “Vintage Papi” is a great name for a wine.
Tim MalcolmTim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
