Savery, Bruntlett Lead Phils To Win

Joe Savery pitched well for the Phillies in a 3-1 win over the Pirates today. For the most part, pitching was strong.

The one lower light was JC Romero, who gave up three hits, the last being an RBI single by Steve Pearce. As an aside, the three hits Romero gave up were all to right-handed hitters.

But the pitching was strong. Savery walked two and struck out one without giving up a hit in two innings. Josh Outman followed, and gave up three hits and two walks in three innings — not a superb performance, but for the most part he was effective. Zach Segovia pitched a spotless two innings and Joe Bisenius — despite giving up two hits — grabbed the save.

Eric Bruntlett had the best day in the lineup, going 3-4 — all singles — with 2 RBI. For a guy with little career offense, that kind of day is a considerable positive.

What we got out of this game:

  1. Joe Savery bounced back solid after a rough first start.
  2. The secret to JC Romero’s success is the side of the plate he’s looking at.
  3. Eric Bruntlett’s hitting could win us a game or two this season.

The Phils will play the Braves today in the team’s first of 21 meetings this year. This won’t count, obviously. Kyle Kendrick looks to have another Kendrick-ian outing (1 ER every 3 IP) against the Bravos. Francisco Rosario and Tom Gordon are scheduled to take the mound, as well.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
