Confirmed: Phils Add Seanez To Bare Bullpen

UPDATE 9:54 a.m.: Todd Zolecki confirms the deal. Seanez will join the bullpen Wednesday. So who is out? Helms? Gordon to the DL? Lahey back to the Twins?

After yesterday’s horrendous showing by the bullpen (Tom Gordon and Ryan Madson, to be exact), the Phillies have been reported to have signed relief pitcher Rudy Seanez. The signing is being reported by the Los Angeles Times (hat tip to Beerleaguer).

Seanez went 6-3 with a 3.79 ERA in 73 games with the Dodgers last season. He’s had success in the National League — notching a 2.69 clip with San Diego in 2005 and a 2.74 with Florida during half of 2004. For his career, he is 36-26 with a 4.15 ERA.

Seanez comes from the right side, and is supposed to join the Phillies before tomorrow night’s game.

I’ll applaud the Phils for finally noticing the weakness and trying to patch it up. Seanez is up there in years (39), but he’s a better option than most in the bullpen, including yesterday’s goat, Tom Gordon. I’d be fine with seeing Seanez in the seventh or eighth innings alongside JC Romero, once Brad Lidge returns.

With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well.
