Seanez Officially Added; Helms Dumped

Wes Helms was designated for assignment today, as the Phillies made space on their 25-man roster for Rudy Seanez, who was acquired late Monday.

The Phillies have 10 days to either trade or release Helms. Last season, Helms hit 5 home runs with 39 RBI and a .246 AVG in 112 games (280 at bats) with the Phils. He also committed a hefty nine errors at third base.

Helms was supposed to be a 20-HR guy for the offense last year — the man who would fill the hot corner before either Mike Costanzo or someone else was ready to take the reins. Since his signing, Greg Dobbs, Abraham Nunez, Eric Bruntlett and Pedro Feliz have seemingly passed him on the depth chart. The guy who hit .329 for Florida in 2006 wasn’t even close to touching half of that in Philadelphia.

It’s unlikely Helms will be dealt now; teams will just wait to claim him in 10 days once he’s released. The Phillies will eat the $2.15 MM he’s worth this season.

Helms was the odd man out, obviously, and wasn’t worth anything to the team after the Feliz acquisition. Sadly, another bad move bites the dust — both big-name acquisitions of the 2006-07 offseason are now wiped from the Phillies white board, forever stains on the Pat Gillick era.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
