Another pick, another toolsy outfielder. Then again …
The Phillies selected OF Anthony Gose with the 51st pick of the draft. Gose is a 17-year-old left-handed hitter who stands at 6′ and 190 pounds.
MLB.com says he can become a Juan Pierre-type hitter who can spray drives and steal bases. Or he can strike out a lot. He can pitch, too, throwing at 97 mph as a lefty, but he seems primed to be an outfielder. Then again (where that comes in), his lack of a bat makes him more of a pitching possibility than originally led on. Hopefully the Phils convert him to pitcher.
If not, this is getting a little out of hand. Three outfielders with speed aren’t what we were really hoping for. Still, why are they planning clearly for 2013 and not addressing short-term (3B, RHP) needs?
In other news, Lenny Dykstra’s son — Cutter Dykstra — was picked 54th by the Brewers.
