Gamenight: Phillies (40-28) At Cardinals (40-28)

Jamie Moyer rescued the Phillies from a sweep at the hands of the Marlins, giving the Phils a three-game lead in the National League East. Now they’ll get a three-game series in Saint Louis against the Cardinals, who sit with the Phils at 40-28, the second-best record in the National League. It’s the treasured “only NL series during a bunch of Interleague series” series of the weekend.

Todd Wellemeyer goes for the Cards. He has a 2.93 ERA, but has never pitched more than seven innings in a game. Who has he defeated? The Giants, the Nationals, the Pirates, the Padres and the Cubs (he threw five innings of 2 ER ball against them). Needless to say, the Phils could bash this guy into next week. The Phils will throw Kyle Kendrick out there. He trudged through 5.1 innings, giving up two earned runs against the Braves in his last start. Kendrick gave up four earned runs in 13 innings to the Cardinals last season. The Phils are 6-1 in his road starts with a five-game winning streak.

Ryan Howard returns home to Saint Louis. He’s been slumping hard all season (duh), but he can hit at home. He’s hitting .333 with 3 HR and 14 RBI at Busch Stadium II.

Rain is pouring throughout the Midwest. We’ll see if they get this one in.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (5-2) 4.87 ERA
Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer (7-1) 2.93 ERA

Gametime: 8:15 p.m. EST
Weather: 74, heavy storms
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Ruiz, Kendrick

Your gamenight beer: Time for a tasty treat. Get yourself an Indian Brown Ale, courtesy of Dogfish Head. It tastes of chocolate, raisins, molasses, all the good stuff. Dogfish Head has a brewpub in Rehoboth Beach, so if you’re bored this weekend, take a trip down and sip that good stuff.

Go Phillies!

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
