Myers Loses No-Hitter, Game To Reds

Brett Myers was in line to pitch the game of his life. Through six, he was throwing a no-hitter. But a couple walks unraveled him and a Joey Votto double ended his bid and cost him a loss. The Phils couldn’t muster offense off Reds pitching and lost 2-0.

Edinson Volquez of the Reds pitched well enough to subdue the Phils, but the Phils bats are what really did them in. They had a few chances to score a couple runs, but couldn’t deliver. Looking back, Ryan Howard’s first-pitch fly out stands out the most. His strikeout in the eighth also comes to mind. At this point, it’s hard to rely on Howard for anything aside from a home run every couple days.

The Phils left 15 men on base. Howard left four. Jenkins and Feliz left three. The hot streak has cooled considerably, leaving Feliz back at .250.

The bullpen couldn’t quite hold down the fort, either. JC Romero let in a run in the ninth, when the Phils really could’ve used a one-run game. He walked two in his inning of work spread between the eighth and ninth.

It’s all a real shame because Myers pitched a fine game. His (six) walks did him in when he needed outs most, but for most of the game he was unhittable. He struck out eight and gave up just one hit — but that hit was the most crucial of all.

This one is tough to swallow, but you have to be excited with the way Myers pitched last night.
