Gillick: “We’ve Got To Start Scoring More Runs”
Nothing too groundbreaking coming out of it, with Gillick mostly toeing the company line. He does remind us Chase Utley is a little injured, which Utley still denies.
At the end Hagen asks him about his legacy, leading to a bit on the offense:
Q. What do the Phillies have to do this year for you to feel good about your 3 years here?
A. You’d like to go to the World Series. We’d love to go to the World Series, and that’s the goal. But the first step is to get into the playoffs. So hopefully we can reach the first goal of getting into the playoffs and then we can go deeper than we did last year and get to the Series.
But we’ve got to get our guys going and we’ve got to start scoring some more runs. If we don’t score more runs, it’s going to be difficult for us.
Q. Do you think you can score more runs with the guys you have here now?
A. I think we can get them going. We were scoring runs last year and I don’t think there’s any reason we can’t score them this year. We’ve just got to get them going, that’s all.
I think Gillick is clearly displeased by his offense’s performance. And judging by the team’s bold push for Matt Holliday and recent discussions with the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez, it seems the team is really trying to upgrade any way they can. Don’t be surprised if the Phils make a solid move for an offensive player (could a Jason Bay/John Grabow package deal be in the works?) before the deadline.
