Phils Promote RJ Swindle

The Phillies have purchased the contract of AAA reliever RJ Swindle, according to Comcast SportsNet.

Swindle is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in 14.2 innings with AAA Lehigh Valley. With AA Reading he went 1-0 with an 0.54 ERA in 16.2 innings. He’s a slow-tossing three-quarter lefty with a achingly slow curveball and a fastball that’s almost as slow. He has 31 strikeouts and five walks. The 25-year-old is a young Jamie Moyer, just with a lot less experience.

Swindle will likely be used as a LOOGY (left-handed one-out guy), and really, it’s about time. The Phils have wanted to put a LOOGY in their bullpen forever, and this is the right guy. He costs next to nothing and provides some much-needed variety to a bullpen of hard throwers. He also marks the first addition to the entire pitching staff since Brad Lidge.

Welcome, to the Great R and J Swindle.

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
