Phils Barrage Braves, Hold On

Joe Blanton spotted the Braves two runs in the first inning, then the rains came. After a nice delay, Adam Eaton spotted the Braves another three runs. Then the bats came alive.

The Phillies won 12-10, thanks to a slew of home runs. They murdered Braves’ pitching throughout the day, holding on late despite cruising in the middle innings.

Shane Victorino provided the big bangs. He tied the game with a three-run homer, then scored a run later by barreling into Brian McCann. The Braves catcher left the game but X-rays were negative. Vic went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.

Homers also came from Chris Coste, Jayson Werth, Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins. Let it be known the offense was the story in this game, single-handedly giving the Phils the win on a wacky, soaked Sunday.

The win went to Clay Condrey, who pitched two fine innings in relief of Blanton (2 IP, 2 ER) and Eaton (2 IP, 3 ER). The latter received a lot of jeers during and after his outing. It’s likely Eaton might be heading to AAA Lehigh Valley, or elsewhere, after this one.

Rudy Seanez and Ryan Madson helped provide a scare with a five-run eighth for the Braves, but the Phils saw their way out and Brad Lidge collected his 24th save in as many chances. The Phils took the series, 2-1, and remain one game in back of the Mets for first place in the NL East.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
