Report: Phils Have Asked About Ramirez

Speculation about Manny Ramirez’s future in Boston has led to rumors about his availability at this trade deadline. The 2009 free agent is worth $20M and has options for 2009 and 2010.

The New York Post reported the two teams that made sense in acquiring Ramirez were the Mets and Phillies. Reasoning? The Red Sox would likely ship Ramirez to the National League, and the Mets and Phils have outfield chips and/or vacancies and have the money to pay Manny.Â

Comcast SportsNet reported the Phils have asked the Red Sox about Ramirez. But could this happen?

Ramirez wouldn’t cost the Phils as much as Matt Holliday, who was rumored to go to the Phils earlier in the trading season as part of a blockbuster deal. But how would the Phils address the outfield if they had Ramirez? Obviously Pat Burrell would become a free agent, and it’s likely the Phils would lose Shane Victorino in the Ramirez trade. A Ramirez/Werth/Jenkins outfield is noit recommended going into 2009.

Speculate what you will, but I cannot see this happening at all.
