Moyer, Bullpen Shut Out Padres

The Phillies snapped their four-game losing streak, taking a 1-0 pitchers’ duel against the Padres Friday night.

Jamie Moyer was the successful elder, giving up just three hits and two walks in seven innings. Of course, the Padres are a horrible hitting ballclub, but you get a great start, you get results. Moyer was sparkling, lowering his ERA 3.64. Hey, if Moyer can do this kind of stuff for a couple more years, I’d welcome a 50-year-old Moyer slinging changeups at the Vault in 2013.

The bullpen held it to win it. Ryan Madson and JC Romero combined to get the Pads in the eighth, giving Chad Durbin a needed day off. Brad Lidge nailed down his 29th save in as many chances.

And I have to mention the great Phillies defense in this one, especially Chase Utley, making a nice play to throw out Greg Maddux, and Jimmy Rollins, who made two spectacular, gold glove plays.

The Phils lone run came from Pat Burrell’s 28th home run of the season, thankfully in the seventh, so Moyer could notch his 11th win. But the Phils only got five other hits and walked just once, while striking out nine times. I can’t stress enough that if this were any other team the Phils were facing, they would’ve lost. This offense is horrendous.

But for one night, celebrate yet another awesome start by Moyer, who keeps defying everything.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
