The name to keep track on, obviously, is Donald, who is flat raking down in Mesa. He’s also been playing some third base down there, as the Phils are hoping to get him acclimated to that position. It’s possible Donald could take over the position as early as late 2009. I wouldn’t be surprised if Donald was with the Phils as a backup infielder by midseason.

Slayden has pop, hitting two homers so far. He’s an outside chance at being a fifth outfielder. Brummett and Carpenter are the other ranked prospects, and both had shaky 2008 seasons, with Carpenter even seeing an inning in Philadelphia. Both would likely start 2009 in Lehigh Valley with Overholt and Escalona, looking for a chance to contribute to the big league club.

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
