NYT: Gillick Master Of The Minor Moves

While we’re all wrapped up in game four, the New York Times’ Tyler Kepner has a nice article about Pat Gillick’s success in Philadelphia and previously.

Ruben Amaro Jr. (who Kepner said was very likely the next GM in Philly), said Gillick’s strength is the bargain bin:

” … for the piece that’s going to help our club be better, he is fantastic. It’s really helped getting a guy like Matt Stairs or J. C. Romero — the pieces that give your team some marginal advantage.”

I agree. While he has been hit-or-miss with blockbusters, he has pulled a lot of the right strings in the role player department. We’ll analyze Gillick’s tenure more in depth once the season ends. For now, this is a good primer.

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
