Odds And Ends: Looper, IronPigs, Winter Leagues

Some Saturday Odds and Ends:

According to the article, Pat Gillick recommended Looper for the general manager job after Gillick decided to step down in 2003. The Mariners instead hired Bill Bavasi, who led the Mariners to a combined 359-451 record and four last-place finishes in five seasons.

  • The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs will host the 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game.

Hopefully some of the guys in the lower levels will be playing in that game. There is hope.

A quick winter leagues update …

  • The Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League continue play, and hitting is faring much better than pitching.

Jason Donald is carrying a .400 average and is fifth in the league in OPS (1.151). Quintin Berry is hitting .359 with a .408 OBP and 5 SB. Jeremy Slayden is hitting .284.  Meanwhile, all four Phillie prospects (Pat Overholt, Andrew Carpenter, Tyson Brummett, Sergio Escalona) carry ERAs over 5.00. Of course, it is a hitter’s league.

  • Over in Hawaii, Dominic Brown is second in the league in hitting (.373) to catching prospect Buster Posey. Meanwhile, Michael Taylor is struggling with a .224 average.
  • Brian Mazone is in Mexico, and is 2-0 with a 2.73 ERA.
  • And Carlos Carrasco has a 2.84 ERA with 19 K and 4 BB in five starts in Venezuela. Carlos Monasterios is carrying a +6.00 ERA, and RJ Swindle has a 1.50 ERA.

And from the blog:

  • Finally, if you were awake early today, you saw a video on the site. Not right now — it’s kind of large.

Tim Malcolm

Tim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
