Every third Sunday, we’ll present “Moniker,” where we nickname a member of the Phillies, for better or worse.
Brett Myers. He doesn’t have a nickname, does he?
Despite a long career in Philadelphia, Myers is one of the only Phillie regulars who doesn’t have a real good nickname. A long-time starter who was converted to closer in 2007, Myers came back to the rotation with poor results. A demotion to the minor leagues revitalized his career, and he had a sparkling second half in 2008. That carried into the postseason, where Myers used his bat to do the talking.
Myers is one-half of his self-proclaimed Redneck Wrecking Crew, with Joe Blanton, and for a small while last season I referred to him as “The Redneck Express.” That might work, but let’s get something in cement. So go ahead: Do your bidding.
Just one caveat: Please make no references to his personal life. They’re unnecessary.
Tim MalcolmTim first found the Phillies as a little infant at Veteran’s Stadium, cheering on a Juan Samuel game-winning home run in his very first game. With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
