Odds And Ends: Phillies Win, Lidge, Werth, F3, Inquirer
- The Phillies defeated the Braves, 7-3, in Grapefruit League action to improve to 2-3.
Marcus Giles went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Eric Bruntlett also recorded two hits. Brett Myers surrendered two runs in three innings, his first outing of the season. Chan Ho Park had a three-inning outing, surrendering one run on four hits. Scott Nestor, Joe Bisenius and Blaine Neal each pitched one scoreless frame.
- Todd Zolecki reports Brad Lidge is experiencing tightness in his forearm, which has kept him from pitching in the Grapefruit League. Chad Durbin also has hamstring soreness.
I have to say, five weeks is an excruciatingly long time to play games and get in shape for the season, especially after the short layoff the Phillies had. I’m certain these guys will be ready to play on April 5, but getting there is a heck of a battle.
- Zolecki also reports Jayson Werth is scheduled to start tomorrow against the Blue Jays.
I’d like to see if Werth really is healthy; if not, he has to rest and get ready for April 5. Heck, I’d almost be happy if the regualrs sat for a couple weeks.
- Mark Gormley of the News Journal writes Rich Dubee is barely recognizing the Fight For Fifth at the moment. He wants the pitchers to get into the flow of things before making any determinations.
Obviously. It’ll take a few weeks to really handicap this race, but at the very early moment, I’d say Happ, then Park, then Kendrick, then Carrasco. It would take an unbelievable spring for Carrasco to make the roster.
