Ryan Howard hit a three-run home run, but the Phillies couldn’t overcome the offensive power of the American World Baseball Classic team, as they fell 9-6.
Kyle Kendrick was lit up in the third inning, giving up a home run to Chipper Jones. It came after Kendrick sat down the intimidating American lineup through two innings. Kendrick allowed five hits in his 2.2 innings. Antonio Bastardo did worse, giving up five runs off three hits and two walks in 2.1 innings. Clay Condrey, Ryan Madson and Blaine Neal shut down the Americans for the final half of the game.
Jason Donald also hit a home run for the Phillies, while Marcus Giles reached base twice and scored both times. For the Americans, Jimmy Rollins went 1-for-2 and Shane Victorino went 1-for-3 with a walk.
