Last night the Mets and Phillies met for the first time in 2009, and New York won battle one behind solid-enough pitching from Mike Pelfrey and an offensive attack that easily defeated Chan Ho Park. Once again, the veteran will be asked to stem the tide.
Jamie Moyer is searching for his fourth win of the season, which would lead the team; bigger picture: 250th career win, which would put him somewhere between Three Fingers Magee and Loopy Louie Sanders (actually Vic Willis and Bob Gibson). He’ll go up against Oliver Perez. The evil one has been out for the Mets this season; manager Jerry Manuel says Perez has one more chance to right his wrongs. That chance is today — time to bash him in.
You would think Phillie hitters have hit the lefty Perez well. Ugh. Ryan Howard is .091. Chase Utley is .188. Pedro Feliz is .000 (14 at bats). On the plus side, Shane Victorino is .313 and Eric Bruntlett is .444. So there’s that.
Luckily the Mets have been almost as bad against Moyer. In 33 at bats, Carlos Beltran is .121. But David Wright is .400 in 35 at bats.
With Chad Durbin, Clay Condrey and JA Happ getting in work yesterday, look for Scott Eyre and Ryan Madson to see time today.
Tim’s at the ballpark for this one.
Go Phillies!
