The Phillies need Brett Myers to be really, really good.
Last night the Phils used almost every pitcher available in the 10-6 win over the Nationals. JA Happ — Saturday night’s scheduled starter — had to pitch two innings; now Andrew Carpenter will start. That means even more potential bullpen use. That means the onus is on Myers.
Myers last faced the Nationals April 29, when he allowed three runs in six innings but lost. His opponent was Scott Olsen, who stopped the Phillies cold with a 5.2-inning, one-run performance. Only a Shane Victorino home run landed on the scoreboard.
Last night’s win was a nice game for much of the offense, as Raul Ibanez collected four hits (including the game-winner), Pedro Feliz did the same and hit the nail-in-the-coffin in the 12th and Carlos Ruiz notched three of his own. The only true goat in the game was Brad Lidge, who made the bullpen pitch beyond its reach. Luckily the Nationals used up their bullpen, too. This should be a … show … of sorts.
Phillies Nation is at McFadden’s Ballpark readying for its bus trip. We’ll be en route during the game, getting ourselves ready for the nightcap.
Go Phillies!
