Gamenight: Phillies (13-10) At Cardinals (17-9)

Philadelphia Phillies (13-10) at Saint Louis Cardinals (17-9)
Brett Myers (1-2, 4.83 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (3-0, 2.76 ERA)

Weather: Partly sunny, 71

A solid performance by Joe Blanton led the Phillies to a 6-1 win at Busch Stadium last night. Now the Phillies can sweep the two-game set with the Cardinals and move to 14-10 with another victory. Brett Myers takes the hill for the Phils.

Myers had a quality start his last time out, but surrendered three runs to the Nationals (thanks to the seventh home run he allowed on the season). There is good news with Myers: He has pitched at least six innings each time out. But the walks and hits remain high, cutting his outings short (his last game was six innings, but he gave up eight hits and three walks). He has battled, and most of the time, he has won.

He’ll have to battle again tonight, because Albert Pujols (.333, 2 HR) has hit him well. Skip Schumaker has also hit two home runs off Myers, but in only 10 at bats. More bad news: He has a 6.97 career ERA at new Busch Stadium (five games).

Adam Wainwright pitches for Saint Louis. He’ll walk a few (18 in 29.1 innings), and give up hits (almost one per inning) and has trouble getting deep into games. Phillie hitters aren’t too experienced against him, but the ones who are (Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley) aren’t hitting too well.

Let’s start a watch (knocking on wood): Shane Victorino is riding a 13-game hitting streak.

Your gamenight beer: Here’s a Hefeweizen. It’s Schneider-Weisse, from old Germany. A bite of citrus is within this brew, but find some banana and cloves enriching the experience. It stings at you a moment, but overall, it’s a worthy drink for a summer afternoon. I’ll take it on his spring night with flounder.

Go Phillies!

With the pinstripes in his blood, he witnessed Terry Mulholland’s 1990 no-hitter, “Steve Carlton Night” at the Vet, game three of the 1993 World Series, countless games during the charmed 2008 championship season and various road excursions. Since November 2007 Tim’s been writing about them daily at Phillies Nation, becoming one of the world’s most popular Phillies scribes. You can catch him on Twitter and Facebook, as well. When he’s not talking about the Phils he’s relaxing with a St. Bernardus ABT 12 or one of his many favored brews.
