Look out. Brett Myers is an ex-Phil and already making declarations. He said in his first news conference with the Houston Astros that he would “stick it” to the team every time out. Two things:
1. If my math is correct, the Phillies paid Brett Myers roughly $30 million during his tenuous tenure here in Philadelphia. That’s not a bad total for someone who ended up with a 4.40 ERA overall.
2. The Phillies and Myers dealt with a myriad of injuries and issues off the field. The domestic dispute comes to the forefront here, but also the time he tried to beat up Phillies beat reporter Sam Carchidi. Not exactly a smooth ride throughout his eight years here.
It’s hard to fathom why he’s pissed at the Phillies for not pursuing him this offseason. They obviously felt he was not worth the risk and decided to go elsewhere. One positive about Myers is that he was a gamer. He always cared about the team (from a fans perspective) and seemed to have a good rapport with everyone in the clubhouse. Other than that, this seems like a business decision by the Phillies. Is he worth $5.1 million guaranteed ($3.1 million plus a $2 million buyout for 2011)? He had a decent run in Philly, so not quite sure where the animosity comes from other than bitterness from having to leave the defending NL Champs.
